Twenty three peace demonstrators were arrested by U S marshals at the Pentagon main entrance after 18 demonstrators blocked a driveway. Most were carried to buses on stretchers and taken to U S District Court in Alexandria Virginia. charges were not specified.
A bill approved 48 to 0 by the Iowa Senate would let counties townships schools and municipalities form area hospital districts to build and operate facilities. Plans require protest petitions. elections determine approval. if one unit rejects the plan the whole proposal collapses though others may proceed. The district could levy property taxes and issue bonds for construction.
The Army opened court martial proceedings against Capt. Howard B. Levy a 30 year old dermatologist from Brooklyn charged with disobeying orders and disloyal statements about the Vietnam War. The judge rejected motions to dismiss, saying the issues involved concern troop morale and the right to protest. Levy is represented by Charles Morgan Jr. of Atlanta from the ACLU.
Washington report on House Appropriations Committee action shows the Johnson administration receiving far less than requested for model cities and rent supplements. The panel approved 237 million of 662 million for model cities and 10 million of 40 million for rent subsidies, while other HUD programs gain modest increases. The move bundles housing cuts into a broader 1968 funding bill, signaling significant narrowing of federal urban renewal and low rent housing support.
In Baltimore hundreds of high school students danced in traffic and outside schools as teachers resumed picketing. About 1,200 teachers stayed away systemwide, with classes continuing at some schools. Officials indicated a move toward a single bargaining agent for teachers.
Washington County adults completed high school equivalency tests and received certificates at a Captain's Table dinner ceremony led by Ralph Kleese and Dwight Bode. Speakers included Mrs. Day and Don Capp, with remarks from Kenneth Russell and teachers Mrs. Bode and Thomas Berthh. Entertainment came from the Hi Fi Singers.
Guerrillas attacked Bien Hoa and Phuoc Vinh with Soviet style rockets, destroying at least two U.S. jets and injuring around 100. Spokesmen said 25 aircraft damaged, six Americans killed, as SAMs and other missiles were reported near the DMZ. The strikes followed a prior incident where a Marine jet bomber was shot down near the DMZ.
A civil rights worker Benjamin Brown died from a shotgun blast during rioting at Jackson State College in Jackson Mississippi as National Guard police and highway patrol cleared Lynch Street after barricades and clashes. The violence began Wednesday night and reoccurred Thursday with missiles and gunfire. Brown, 29, a truck driver and member of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, was reported dead early Friday with others wounded. authorities said he may have been among the attackers, a claim disputed by witnesses. National Guard troops later moved in to restore order and enforce a curfew.
In Des Moines Iowa a ceiling collapse showered plaster onto Chief Clerk William Kendrick in the state House chamber as representatives debated a major revenue bill. A second piece fell moments later prompting precautionary measures and hat for protection before proceedings resumed. Building workers were dispatched to inspect the cause.
United Press International reports mostly cloudy skies across Iowa through Saturday with a chance of intermittent rain or drizzle tonight and a risk of showers and thunderstorms Saturday. Near freezing temperatures are forecast in the north tonight, with a slight warmup on Saturday. Lows range from 32 to 36 in the north and 40 to 45 in the south. highs Saturday near 58 to 62 degrees.
U S Marine Pfc Willard J Friese of Washington route three is posthumously awarded the Vietnam Military Merit Medal and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Palm for actions that aided South Vietnamese forces before his death in action on March 21 1966 at age 19 General Wallace M Greene Jr Marine Commandant sends a letter of appreciation to his parents detailing the awards and his heroic conduct The citations praise his courage cooperation and dedication in blocking the Red wave and serving alongside Vietnamese forces
