Wave of Loss Tests Wasp Rescue Efforts in Atlantic Collision

A fleet including the destroyer O'Hare sailed from Norfolk April 22 to relieve ships off Europe. The Wasp collided with the Hobson 485 miles southeast of Newfoundland, sinking it with 87 percent of Hobson's crew lost. Rescue attempts by the Wasp and escorts were hampered by a northeast gale, and only one body was recovered. The incident prompted a naval inquiry into the disaster the worst since World War I. A Portuguese square-rigger and dwindling rescue teams marked the scene as the sea yielded few survivors.
