Mexico City Quake Rocks Capital and Regions
A strong earthquake struck Mexico City and surrounding states. walls cracked, ceilings toppled, and traffic halted. No immediate casualties were reported though extensive damage included broken glass, fires from short circuits, and seismograph disruptions. The quake reached Acapulco and was felt across southern Mexico.

Social Security Benefits Grow in Washington County
By end of 1961 about 2550 persons in Washington County received old age survivors and disability insurance. Monthly benefits totaled $156,000 with 1500 retired, 530 wives, 215 children, 200 widows, and 75 disabled workers receiving payments. Nationally over 16 million beneficiaries received more than a billion dollars in December 1961.
