Howard Lins, chair of the county ASC, said farmers in Washington county may still apply to the 1961 feed grain program even if oats are planted. Oats on diverted acres may stay standing to meet conservation rules, with excess oats harvestable. About 60 percent of corn and grain sorghum producers are expected to participate. 600 farms have signed up. Grazing restrictions on diverted acres take effect June 1, and sign-up should not be delayed to avoid a rush at county offices. Participating farmers receive special payments and price support for 1961 crops, while nonparticipants lose eligibility for price support.
