In Lynn Massachusetts Mrs. Roger Miles fell asleep while smoking in a chair causing a fire that led to severe worm infection and hospitalization. Her husband in a nearby room later dozed off in a chair with a cigarette and also caused a small fire.
The Washington YMCA will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday May 12 at 6 30 p m with a dinner in the community room The board will elect five new members and reports of the year will be heard Joseph Connell YMCA secretary Kitchen er Ontario Canada will be the main speaker Nominating committee names eight candidates Reservations for dinner were due today but any member may attend the business meeting Acoustical tile ceiling and floor work in the community room are complete with funding from Washington s Men s club Stanly Zager contributed 25 dollars Mr Connell a noted orator and former Royal Canadian Air Force member has extensive YMCA work history in Canada and abroad
Tornadoes ripped north central and northeastern Iowa injuring at least two people and causing extensive damage. The Ventura to Clear Lake area saw a twister injuring a couple. another swept Guttenberg toward Garnaville and McGregor with trees and barns reported down. High winds hail and rain damaged farms and homes across the state with power lines and trees felled in multiple counties.
Tornadoes killed at least 10 people and wounded more than 180 across seven states, with Minnesota experiencing the strongest, most destructive blow as the storms raged Sunday night.
Mrs Lucy L Askea 72 of 608 east Madison street died at 145 p m Saturday in Miami Florida after years of illness Funeral services will be at 230 p m Wednesday May 13 at Shermans funeral home Rev W J Stevens in charge Burial in Elm Grove cemetery She was born Nov 3 1880 Audubon Iowa daughter of George F and Mary Schoonover Cook She married George W Asken Aug 19 1897 He died Feb 7 1939 Survivors include two sons Herbert B and Albert V Askea both of Washington five daughters Mable Thatcher Austin Minn Lamp and Verna Scott both of Miami Grace Willis Rock Island Ill Nellie Monroe Grinnell Iowa 15 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren One brother Delbert Cook Cortland NY two sisters Emma Campbell Washington and Luella Snyder Redwood Falls Minn also survive
Cpl. Richard Morrison, 22, of Burlington, one of the first American POWs freed by communists in Korea, returned Sunday afternoon for a first visit since May 1950. He received a state proclamation, met officials, and enjoyed a family dinner before relaxing at home. Morrison reunited with his girlfriend Le Alta Johnson, 20, and asked for no public celebration.
Funeral services for Jane Clem ens were held at 2 30 p m Sunday in the Crawfordsville Federated church with Rev Ernest Smith and Dr W T McIntyre in charge. Music by a mixed quartet. Pallbearers were Charles Kennedy Harley Rhea Merle Twinam John D Jones Frank Bailey and Fred Mitchell. Burial in Crawfordsville cemetery. Sherman's funeral home in charge of arrangements.
Funeral services for Frank B. Miller were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church with Dr. E. L. Haney presiding. Attendees included Rotary Club members city council members and Iowa Southern Utilities employees. Pallbearers were Harry Turner Tom Gray Harry Ward Ted Johnson Henry Little and William Mohland. Burial followed at Elm Grove Cemetery. Jones Funeral Home supervised arrangements.
Joseph Warner, long-time Washington county lineal, died at a Sandstone Minnesota home. He left Washington over 50 years ago with his wife passing five years past. The couple had 12 children, nine living, with siblings including Mrs. Clara Godlove, Mrs. May Hopengardner, Rene Warner, Ode Warner, Mrs. Harry Tillotsem, Charlies of Clintes, and Earl of Albert Lea.
Mrs. Claude Smith aged 75 of Iowa City was injured when a car driven by her son Paul E. Smith 35 of Clinton lost control on the Davis Creek hill near the junction of Highway 22 and 218 east of Riverside. The accident occurred at 10 30 a m. Mrs. Smith was thrown from the car and taken to an Iowa City hospital with a brain concussion and shock.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at Herman's funeral home with Dr. W J Grossheim in charge. Pallbearers were T O Johnson, C S Lemmon, J E Lemmon, Fred Longer, Silas Korf and Lyle Wilson. Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery.
Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Flo range were conducted at 9 a m today at St James Catholic Church with Father R J Kinnavey officiating. Pallbearers included Harry Dettwiler David Blankenhorn Felix Flor ang Henry Prymek Frank Dvor ak and William Chmelar. Burial followed at Elim Grove cemetery with Jones funeral home in charge of arrangements.
Eight Iowans died and 13 were injured in weekend accidents across the state. Youths in two cars collided near Storm Lake killing four and injuring one. A flower box fatally crushed three year old Marvin Bear in Cincinnati. A Keokuk motorcyclist died from injuries after a cow collision. Therese Malone of Omaha died from a Boone area crash. John Eisenbacher was killed walking along a Wesley highway. A light plane crash near Fort Madison injured three Savannah Missouri residents.
Eddie Morrison a Washington high school senior won second prize in the 1953 Iowa Poetry Day contest announced by Mrs. Margaret Heinrich of Cedar Rapids state president. Marjorie Galtry Fairfield won first in the high school division. Morrison’s winning poem Winter in Korea depicts snow and war. He is the son of Mr and Mrs RE Morrison Jr. The poem references the Ed Rump farm near Denmark Hill north of Fort Madison.
An elderly 70 year old woman named Julia Stallings believed dead was removed from a home for embalming and opened her eyes in a morgue after about 17 hours. She said I’m not dead and appeared dazed but in good condition.
At Panmunjom UN truce chief Lt Gen Harrison says eight point Communist proposal is not a final resolution and requests a more direct plan. North Korea’s Nam Il declines to elaborate while Nam’s aide blows smoke rings during the 53 minute session. The UN objects to a political commission that could force forcible repatriation. Nam refuses further.comment.
The Great Lakes freighter Henry Steinbrenner foundered in Lake Superior near Isle Royale during hurricane winds. Ten of 31 crewmen drowned, nine rescued from liferafts. Captain Albert Stiglin survived. The ship struck Rock of Ages and sank after flooding, with rescue vessels and the Joseph Thompson aiding survivors.
Washington reports a clash between Churchill's plan for a swift meeting of major powers and U.S. peace strategy. The administration requires verified peaceful Soviet actions before international talks, while Eisenhower urged concrete deeds to prove sincerity. White House and State Department had no comment.
Installation will be held by the Moose lodge Tuesday evening. Vice president Forest Barker of Iowa City will present the bowling trophies at this meeting.
London reports Churchill proposes a high level conference among top powers to back a Korea armistice based on a new Communist eight point plan. He envisions a small group and says the agreement could come swiftly if the Communists act in sincerity. He also signals taking Eden's foreign duties and cites May ministers talks on Austria sovereignty.
Des Moines forecast shows increasing cloudiness tonight with showers spreading to the extreme south late tonight and across most of the state tomorrow. Temperatures soften to the 38 to 42 degree range tonight in most areas.
