On the French Front in France May 11 German artillery under crown princes targets Amiens to terrify and destroy. The bombardment has left parts of the city in ruins and killed 52 men, 50 women and five children, with injuries to 62 men, 48 women and 12 children before evacuation.
British and French forces report local successes on the Somme front with the French recapturing Grivesnes park and the British restoring trench lines near Amiens. Haig’s official communiqué notes continued artillery battles north of Albert and in Flinders Rear, with German casualties and prisoner counts mentioned amid ongoing operations in Picardy and Flanders.
Washington May 11 The treasury department insists urgent legislation is needed as wartime expansion drives up costs. Secretary McAdoo informs Senator Simmons that new revenue measures are required immediately, with a treasury statement on taxes and bonds to follow in days. London May 11 The Association of Chambers of Commerce of the United Kingdom replies to a US chamber telegram stating that US business men back their president and government. It says UK business men are animated by the same sentiment and ready to back the effort.
