Iowa Senate eyes productivity based farmland tax plan
Des Moines Republicans report a breakthrough in gathering support for shifting farmland assessments from market value to productivity. A Senate Ways and Means Committee forecast shows in 93 counties the shift would not disrupt taxes, increasing rural base to 18.6 billion and urban value to 13.3 billion. The plan would keep half productivity half market value with a 75 percent cap on annual assessment increases, and would still produce about 886 million in tax dollars. Farmers would receive a small 3.4 million tax break. Governor Ray’s veto concerns cited uncertain impacts, with improved data now easing fears.

Worker dies in explosion at Iowa plant
Dennis Hubbs, 31, of Dallas City Illinois, died when an asphalt tank at Spring Sand and Gravel Co exploded. A second worker, Kenny Brown, 27, of rural Burlington, was treated for burns. Fire marshal officials investigated the blast as Hubbs stood on a catwalk about 20 feet above the tank.

The Washington County Red Cross chapter will run a summer swim program at the Washington Municipal pool from June 6 to July 15. Classes run 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday for ages eight and up who are residents of Washington County. Registration ends May 23 and may be obtained at schools or the Red Cross office. pool registrations are not accepted. A basic rescue and water safety course will also be offered for swimmers at least 11 years old. Cancellations will be announced via KCII radio.

DES MOINES UPI Iowa Department of Public Instruction officials say the distribution of federal commodity foods to Iowa schools has worked well and they do not understand problems reported in other states. Suspects arrested in crime against grocery heiress
Marion County sheriff's police say two Indianapolis men John Williams 38 and Manuel Robinson 29 were arrested Monday night in connection with the murder of grocery store heiress Marjorie V Jackson. Police recovered over 1 million dollars linked to about 3 million in thefts from her three acre estate. Robinson charged with first degree murder. Williams as accessory after the fact. A Lincoln purchased for cash and other jewelry tied to the case were recovered. Arraignments set for later today.
