University of Wisconsin meteorologist Reed A. Bryson warned that increasing atmospheric dust since 1950 could cool the planet toward 1930s conditions. He cited Mauna Loa dust rising 30 percent per decade and a Swiss observatory noting 84 percent more dust 1957-59 versus 1900s. He warned the trend may continue and noted lack of research interest as a barrier.

NASA said engineering changes to the Apollo moonship after the fatal January fire would cost about 75 million dollars. The agency can absorb this within existing program funds, keeping total manned spaceflight cost at about 22.7 billion with potential rise to 23.1 billion if the lunar deadline slips.
