The Senate passed a tax reduction bill cutting income taxes by 25 percent this year and reforming most federal taxes. It edits the income schedule and corporate tax, and calls for publicity of tax returns. Conference with the House will settle final differences before final passage.
Des Moines report says the Iowa Presbyterian Education Fund of 2 million dollars is short 500000. Rev F C McKean announced at a rally that funds will aid Coe Parsona and Buena Vista colleges and Christian education centers linked to Iowa State and University campuses.
Scores were overcome by automobile exhaust fumes in the Twin Liberty tunnels due to a 3200 street car strike. First aid crews, oxygen, and rescue teams worked as tunnels were closed to traffic. Commuters faced disruption with rail shuttle and bus service as workers reported serious conditions and hospitals treated the affected. The Allegheny county commissioners ordered tunnel closures. The Pittsburgh railway company planned to resume service Monday with substitutes from other cities.
Secretary Hoover will provide his view to the Senate Agricultural Committee on the Muscle Shoals project next week. He was delayed today by other business.
Washington May 10 The Japanese exclusion provision in the immigration bill will become effective July 1 1924 under a new agreement reached by House and Senate conferees. The compromise modifies earlier action and avoids March 1 1925 as the date. The report will be sent to the House Monday, then to the Senate if approved. Springfield Mass May 10 The Methodist Episcopal general conference asked Congress to deport aliens twice convicted of prohibition and narcotic laws and to urge federal agents to enforce the law. An amendment to disfranchise citizens for a third offense was tabled.
Four men die when a Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul passenger train crashes into their car near Mayfair station in the northeastern outskirts of Chicago. Victims are Joseph Marielo, Sylvester Sullivan, Paul Zeidell, and Thomas McNamara, all of Chicago.
Warm weather and good track conditions greeted nearly 200 athletes from eleven conference schools at the Iowa conference track and field meet in Des Moines. Preliminaries ran this morning with final events starting at 2 p.m.
The Magnolia Petroleum Co cuts crude oil prices by 15 to 25 cents per barrel varying by grade in Texas Oklahoma and Kansas effective today. Separately Pittsburgh buyers announce a 25 cent per barrel drop on nine crude oils citing overproduction as the reason.
Five Des Moines high school students face grand larceny charges after being arrested in Grinnell for allegedly stealing an automobile. The group includes two girls and several were to be held by juvenile officers pending disposition of the case.
Sheldon high school chorus won first prize in the mixed chorus division at the state high school music contest, earning an engraved silver loving cup. Judges moved Sheldon to class A, outranking other schools. Hampton and Rockford won class B and C. Orchestra winners were Cedar Rapids, Rockford, and Chelsea. Girls' glee club closes the program, with a concert tonight by all division champions.
Seven automobile bandits robbed the East Chicago Indiana post office at 7 30 this morning and escaped with four registered mail pouches. They followed a taxicab from the Pennsylvania railroad station and held up five employees as they received fifteen pouches of mail. The bandits fled toward Chicago. payroll money was denied by the postmaster though reports linked a payroll due for Republic Iron and Steel.
Falk J. Younker died from carbon monoxide fumes while working on his car in his Des Moines garage. An 85 year old Keokuk native, he helped found Younker Bros. Company before retiring 14 years ago to pursue investments. Survived by wife Mrs. Younker and several siblings in the east. funeral plans not yet made.
In Saltville Virginia on May 10 Rosa St Clair aged 86 shot and killed her husband Robert St Clair and her two year old daughter before taking her own life leaving investigators to piece together the motive and sequence of events in the family tragedy.
Three United States Army aviators landed at Attu Island at 10 last night Pacific coast time after a 530 mile flight from Atka Island. Led by Lieutenant Lowell H. Smith in the air cruiser Chicago the group logged ten hours and 50 minutes, completing the first division of a 27,000 mile round the world journey amid fair weather and head winds.

Senator Norbeck indicated he would withhold a forced vote tactic but kept pressure on the rules committee. At the Methodist Episcopal general conference in Springfield Massachusetts delegates approved a plea to admit all peoples to the United States and citizenship regardless of race color or nationality. They denounced anti alien measures as unpatriotic and unchristian and urged Congress to oppose beer bills and strengthen prohibition enforcement through a federal bureau with civil service protection.
Berlin May 10 All members of the Russian soviet government commercial delegation arrested in the police raid on the delegation’s headquarters have been released, according to Vossische Zeitung.
