Soldier's body from Brest laid to rest at Kalona
Kalona May 10 On Sunday afternoon funeral services were held for George Wells the first Washington county soldier home from France He died of pneumonia after service in the war and was buried in Brest His body arrived Thursday evening and public funerals were held in He Ketone park with a military ceremony and firing squad The American Legion post and comrades of Mr Wells attended The service drew a large crowd and included remarks by Father F J Schaeffer and L J Dougherty who faced travel issues from Muscatine Davenport background notes quoted but did not summarize every detail

Keota Wins County Track Meet at Keokuk
Keota won the Keokuk county high school track meet held last Saturday with 45 points. Richland was second with 32, Sigourney and Martinsburg tied for third and fourth. The meet, the first of its kind in the county, drew strong support from Keota and featured stars Russell, Ralston, Bayliss, Adams, Balderson, and Strong in sprints, distance, and field events. Fall times were recorded, and a baseball throw plus a “chinning” event were added to the program.

Auto Spill Injures Cedar Rapids Men
Two Cedar Rapids youths formerly from Washington, John Bailey and Everette Schenevelt, were hurt ten miles north of town when Bailey’s Dodge struck a soft rutted road. Both suffered bruises and minor injuries, with Bailey cut on an arm and Schenevelt nursing a badly wounded back. The car suffered front-end damage while the other vehicle involved escaped serious harm.

Child Dies After Lye Poisoning Near Hanmes
A child, son of Mr and Mrs Minuett Hanmes eleven miles northwest of town, is near death after straying from a neighbor party onsunday and finding lye. His mouth and lungs burned, he became unconscious and died soon after despite prompt treatment. Mrs Al Pearson of Ainsworth visited in town Saturday.

Washington churches press Inter church Movement pledges with several congregations meeting goals. Second United Presbyterian reports full allotment of 340,660 to be paid in five installments. First United Presbyterian, with a 75,000 quota, has over 45,000 subscribed as canvass continues vigorously. First Church bears a heavy load with 135,000 total to raise including a 69,000 new building. Rapier canvassers pursue 28,000 over four years, about 20,000 pledged. Presbyterians near their 12,000 yearly goal, including regular expenses and movement addition. Target nearly reached.

Small Boy Hurt in Bonds Incident in Columbus Junction
May 10. Kutcher Carey seven year old son of Mr and Mrs Clyde Carey was run over by a Washington Pudey driver John Bidwell in the afternoon. The boy was slightly bruised with no other injuries. The accident was deemed unavoidable and blamed on the driver as the boy darted across the street.
