Marshal Chang Tso-lin ordered all northern Chinese troops to cease fighting as China faces external danger. He spoke after an appeal by the Shanghai chamber of commerce for unity against Japan and acknowledged foreigners’ involvement in domestic troubles.
The Washington Y's Men’s Club won the district attendance contest covering clubs in Iowa and Nebraska with an average attendance of 92 percent over several months. Washington ranked first among many larger cities. Ottumwa placed second. Plans were set at the meeting for the state convention in Des Moines on May 19 and 20 with three members, President Russell Jennings, Ted Brown and Richard McCleery, on the program.
Little Helen Zimerman of Waterloo visiting at the E. W. Browning home here went to Mediapolis this morning to visit her grandparents Dr. and Mrs. Eli Browning. Her mother Mrs. Zimerman is visiting at Mediapolis.
The Bremen crew landed at Philadelphia navy yard airport at 11 41 am after a just over one hour flight from New York. Fog and light rain delayed the trip over New Jersey as Captain Herman Koeh and Major James Fitzmaurice piloted the F 138 sister ship. Baron Gunther Von Huenefeld led the reception as hundreds gathered to greet the visitors.
Four towns show receptivity to a Washington county baseball league patterned after last winter's basketball circuit. Secretary Harry Kreider of the Y M C A hopes to recruit two more teams from towns in the county or nearby counties. Border towns Wyman Wayland and Keota with Washington now costa as potential members. Officials aim to organize within a week or two to play this season.
Hall Bros. opens a tiny three ring circus in the Y gymnasium. The display includes a circus train, parade wagons, tents, side show, and a trained seal. H. M. Carmichael demonstrates a pocket knife carved by four years of work. Large crowds gathered as the exhibit drew visitors and a nominal charge was collected.
Washington May 9 Hoover told the senate campaign investigating committee he made no personal expenditures to win the Republican presidential nomination aside from minor items. He said he would rely on his campaign treasurer James R. Good for full contributions and expenses of the Hoover organization.
The declamers contest for grade school pupils from townships and county towns will be held at the Junior high school starting at eight o'clock. Marion township will send three contestants across humorous, dramatic and oratorical divisions, with other entrants from Washington Lime Creek Dutch Creek and possibly more townships. The Ainsworth Brighton and West Chester schools participate, totaling about a dozen contestants. Judges are Supt. J. H. Peet Miss Jessie Kerr and Miss Charlotte Foster. Brief musical numbers will gap the program and humorous recitations from Marion township will be shown while judges decide. Admission is free and all are invited.
Carl Hardin traveled to Burlington yesterday on business. He conducted unspecified meetings and activities related to his professional duties in the city.
Lieutenant Royal V. Thomas and aeronautical engineer Waugh Weatherly were killed when the Bellanca aircraft, used for a speed test, crashed during a flight from Teterboro airport near the Teterboro golf club. Thomas had recently set a solo endurance record over Long Island eclipsing Lindbergh. The craft turned over several times and struck tail first. both men were crushed in the wreckage.
Radio listings from 1928 highlight WJZ at 6:30 with pianist Josef Shevinne then Maxwell hour at 7 on WOR Newark with 8 o clock Choir Invisible. KOA Denver hosts band concerts during Denver music week at 9, and WRC Washington airs U. S. Marine band at 5.

Mrs. Ella Hancher of Washington and her uncle Henry Winkleman of Snook Nebraska depart for Des Moines to visit her sister Mrs. Anna Miller for about a week. Winkleman, who has stayed two weeks at the Jake Simmering home, plans to return to Montana from Des Moines.
Mrs Sarah Fish travels to Muscatine last evening to establish residence with her son C P Fish marking a family relocation to Iowa.
Belgrade reports say Roumanian censorship remains strict with all coverage of internal affairs curbed. Several correspondents, including Johann Zaranu of Bucharest Adeverul, have been arrested or warned. Juliu Maniu plans to meet the regency Thursday to resolve the Peasants congress and the Bratianu government resignation.
The conference report on a $325 million flood control bill is believed approved by President Coolidge and was accepted by the senate. The measure now heads to the White House for signature.
The annual Little Six track meet at Burlington is expected to be among the closest in history with Ottumwa, Fairfield, Muscatine and Washington fielding strong teams. Mt. Pleasant is not expected to compete, while Burlington aims to match last year’s performance. Preliminaries start at ten and finals follow in the afternoon.
President J W Enslin announces the Better Washington club meeting moved from Thursday to Friday May 11 at 7 30 PM in City Hall room due to use by others. Several important points to be discussed and the business to be completed in one hour. Members urged to attend and nonmembers are invited.

Nine Iowa counties including Cass Cedar Fayette Ida Poweshiek and Taylor will get grading and bridge construction work worth $383,744.29. The state highway commission awarded contracts yesterday for projects totaling $220,658.60 in these counties.
The Methodist church choir directed by Hermann N. Schuster performed a National Music Week program with 32 voices. Highlights included duets by Mrs. H. B. Knight and Mr. Schuster, an octette from Stainers Crucifixion, and a Gounod duet by the Schusters. Miss Hunter played organ pieces, and floral tributes honored Adam Louise Jenkins of the Fortnightly club.
In Cedar Rapids Iowa May 9 two counties Linn and Johnson police and vigilantes failed to find a clue to the Swisher bank bandits who yesterday held up the Trust and Savings bank looting 2017 dollars. Reports named two girls as companions with three youths involved and said a third youth waited in the auto while the others bound the cashier and a customer and fled toward Cedar Rapids.
Des Moines Ford plant officials said the re opening will be a gala event and capacity production will begin daily. The plant is expected to employ about 500 workers while Omaha and other plants resume and expand operations with 325 to 600 workers.
Indiana results show U S Senator James R. Watson leading Herbert Hoover in the state primary with about 25 000 votes more than Hoover Out of 2793 precincts reporting Watson has 153201 and Hoover 128899 Meanwhile Senator Arthur Robinson appears set to win the Republican nomination for the United States Senate with 151256 votes against 72927 for Gilliam and 40515 for Carter
The Iowa weather and crop bureau reported May 9 that sunshine is up 17 percent but rain is badly needed in southeastern and southern Iowa. Corn planting progress is good where soils allow, but many southern areas are halted by clouded soil. oats improve with rain though stands remain weak in half of the state. Barley, winter wheat, grasses, plums, apples, and cherries show varying conditions across regions.
A coroner's jury found Mrs. J May and her adopted daughter Helen Perrego died in an accidental kerosene explosion at their farm near La Mars Iowa while preparing a meal last week. The husband J C Day was in the farm yard when the blast occurred and helped extinguish the flames.
