Iowa Senate OKs 22.4 Million Annual Agency Budget Rise
The Iowa Senate passed a bill to appropriate 22.4 million dollars yearly to run 38 state agencies after six hours of debate focused on judges and the governor salary. The measure, 55 to 1, includes 2,000 dollar annual raises for 76 district court judges and nine Supreme Court justices, financed by total state costs of 168 thousand dollars yearly. Governor Ray receives a 3,000 dollar raise to 33,000 dollars, while Revenue Director Forst remains at 24,000. The House must now consider Senate changes to the agency bill and the retirement plan remains a separate issue.

Brighton Soldier Wounded in Vietnam Action
Sp-4 Larry G. Widmer, son of Mr and Mrs Rex Widmer of Brighton, was badly wounded April 26 in Vietnam while with the 196th Light Infantry. He and five other soldiers hit a mine between companies two and three and were injured. He is hospitalized in Japan and hoped to be flown to the United States in about 14 days. His grandparents are Mr and Mrs Tony Meath of Brighton and Mr and Mrs Ernest Lunow of Washington.

Three Loras College students die in Iowa crash
Three Loras College seniors, Thomas Bryant of Chicago George Nieman of Hot Springs and Charles Mitchell of Wilmette, were killed in a one vehicle crash on highway 416 five miles west of Dubuque. Driver Eugene Fleming of Chicago and Keith Aldinger of Old Bridge were in fair condition at Mercy Medical Center. The car rolled down an embankment after veering from the road, hit a utility pole, and rested in a ditch after traveling about 600 feet.
