Students Enjoy Banquet and Prom at Washington High

Saturday night the annual junior senior banquet and prom at Washington high School drew students from the turn of the century Mississippi River showboat to Paris in the spring. Theme showboat then An Evening in Paris with Miss Bernice Wilcke heading prom preparations and Miss Delores Mitchell in charge of the banquet. Frank Kos welcomed the seniors. Joe Pollock spoke for the seniors. Rev. Lloyd Latta gave the invocation and Dave Livingston of Washington, Ann Stewart and Sharon Erwin spoke in brief program notes.

Death reported for D Norwood Jones of Huntley Illinois from Sunday obituary. Funeral planned Wednesday in Huntley. He was born to Emma and John Jones and grew up in Washington after graduating from local high school in 1918. Survived by daughter Sally of California and sister Mrs George A Pauls of Cedar Rapids.

Grinnell High School choir presented a vocal music concert this afternoon under director Joe McCoy. The performance at the Grinnell high school auditorium was the second half of a school exchange with Grinnell School, recalling a prior visit two years ago during the spring tour.

Floods, Tornadoes Rattle Midwest Amid Rising Death Toll

Severe weekend rains and a tornadic storm system battered seven states. At least 30 people died with Oklahoma tallying 15, Arkansas 10, Missouri 4 and Illinois 1. Red Cross estimated 4,000 affected and 1,000 families. Emergency shelters opened as towns like Milford Ky and Centralia Ill suffered heavy flood damage.

Dilts Boy Injured After Struck by Car Near Columbus Junction

Dennis Dilts 13 son of Mr and Mrs Richard Dilts of Letts sustained a fractured skull when he dashed onto highway 76 four miles north of Columbus Junction as a car driven by Everett Stapp of Columbus Junction approached. He was taken to Muscatine General Hospital. The incident occurred while the Dilts family visited the Eugene Conaway home.

Iowa lawmakers leave many bills in legislative graveyard

In Des Moines the 59th Iowa General Assembly adjourned after a 118 day session with a long list of un enacted proposals. Gov. Norman A. Erbe faced intra party disputes while Republicans held strong majorities in both chambers. Bills dead include public defender reform four year terms for major offices a district attorney system and annual sessions. Urban rural divides and party voting also blocked many measures.

Retirement teacher Magdalene Nicola dies in Iowa City

Magdalene Nicola 73 died Sunday at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after a month as patient. A Wellman teacher for 38 years she retired five years ago and was active in church and education groups. Survivors include son Harold Nicola, grandchildren and great grandchildren, plus siblings and relatives. Burial at Wellman Cemetery with Powell Funeral Home handling arrangements. Funeral Tuesday at 2 pm at Wellman Baptist Church.

Sheriff investigators probe a shooting near a minister's home at about 2 15 am Sunday with shotgun blasts shattering downstairs and upstairs windows. The minister says he knows of no motives or suspects harming him or his family.

Weather Outlook for Iowa Turn Cooler With Faint Frost

Clearing and cooler tonight with scattered frost in western and northern areas. Tuesday remains fair and cool with lows in the 30s to 40s and highs in the 50s. Wednesday improves to generally fair and a little warmer. Five day temperatures trend 3 to 5 degrees below normal, with a cool start and warming midweek, possible showers at period end. Normal highs in mid 60s north to near 70 south. normals lows mid 40s north to upper 40s south. Precipitation averaged 0.3 to 0.5 inch in showers late period.
