A blaze at the Rock Island stockyards on North Twelfth Street destroyed forty tons of hay four live stock pens a small hay barn and three old railroad box cars used for hay storage. Firefighters faced hydrant shortages and a large crowd as they fought the flames for hours. Turkington Bros reported all 500 head of cattle in the pens were moved to safety with no losses. Cause not yet determined.
Des Moines May 8 weather bureau says weekend showers may delay corn planting in Iowa while sun later may bring 54 percent in ground by Saturday. May 10 marks the traditional planting start. about 20 percent had been planted to date.
