Modified rates align with the inheritance tax schedule, starting at 2 percent at $25 600 and rising to 86 percent on gifts over $5 000 000. Fog and snow earlier delayed departure while Coast Guard Haida tracked missing commander Major Frederick L Martin. Portuguese aviators Paes and Bieros reportedly crashed in Jodhpur but escaped injury. Aviation interests offered a new aircraft to continue toward Macao after flying over 6 500 miles.
Chicago May 7 Consumers of cotton goods may gain longer wear from sheeting belting canvas and tires if cotton standards include tensile strength in classing for market. A 15 year field and technical study by the Bureau of Industrial Research proposes revisions. The report also links current standards to child labor and illiteracy in cotton states. It notes data agreeing with condemning the mix of unripe and ripe cotton in bales sent to market.

Joseph P. Day announced a smoking restriction at the Democratic National Convention in New York. A department store offers a clubroom for delegates and guests at Madison Square Garden. The art theatre will become a lounge and smoking room with postal and telephone facilities. A direct garden entrance will connect to the theatre for indoor access.
President Coolidge forgoes his routine half mile morning walks at the White House due to mounting Capitol work as adjournment approaches. He now spends mornings in study and only takes a long evening walk after leaving his office.
President Coolidge told students at a political campaign school in Washington that party organization is necessary for effective government. He likened disorganization to a mob and praised party loyalty, citing Lincoln, Grant, Cleveland and Wilton as examples. He urged selecting candidates near ideals and then supporting their principles to promote good government.
The Department of Agriculture forecasts the winter wheat crop for this year at 553,013,000 bushels, about 3.4 percent below last year’s output. Rye is forecast at 61,729,000 bushels, down from 63,028,000 last year. Area harvested on May 1 is about 36,898,000 acres, down from autumn plans and last year’s total, with ten-year average around 39,222,000 acres.
A delegation led by Wayne B. Wheeler of the Anti Saloon League testified before the house judiciary committee against bills to permit 2.75 percent beer. Francis F. Harley of the National Liberal Alliance claimed seven million supporters would vote for modification. A dispute arose over church ballot boxes cited by Harley and Foster challenged the voting evidence.

Nashville Tenn May 8 A special session of the Southern Methodist College of Bishops is expected to be held here today or tomorrow to consider the unification action taken by the Methodist Episcopal conference yesterday at Springfield Mass Senior Bishop W A Candler has not yet issued a call for such meeting Official notification of the Northern conference resolution is awaited here.
Amite Alabama May 8 Governor Parker refused to grant a reprieve for Joseph Bocchio sentenced to hang tomorrow with five others for the murder of Dallas Calmes three years ago. The six condemned will die in alphabetical order as requested by Calmes and his family. The sheriff Lem Bowden announced the execution order.
The report lists May 1 conditions and forecasts for winter wheat in key states. Illinois shows 70 with 29,950,000 production. Iowa 108. Missouri 75 and 24,027,000. Nebraska 46,586,000. Kansas 88 and 124,092,000. Hay stocks on farms total 12,823,000 tons, 12.0 percent of last year, and pasture conditions average 80.2 percent of normal versus 77.0 a year ago and 84.9 for the ten year average.

Springfield Massachusetts May 8 delegates at the Methodist Episcopal general conference vote to end the long split between North and South churches and plan to consider admitting women to the pulpit. The ordination commission was set by the 1920 Des Moines conference to report to 1924.
Chicago report details Robert E. Goodman and Elsie B. Goodman who divorced in 1921. Goodman, once a brokerage cashier, faced an $8,200 shortfall and a year in jail after a Los Angeles arrest. Elsie, who aided his recovery, agreed to marry him again to help him restart after his release. Two days ago he was freed.

Washington May 8 The Senate heatedly debated the immigration bill with Democrats and Republicans assailing the conference report postponing Japanese exclusion. Senator Robinson Arkansas led the attack joined by Senators Borah Idaho and Johnson California. The conference proposal to cancel the gentlemen’s agreement drew protests as an abrogation of domestic immigration principles. President Coolidge was accused of an abrupt about face on the exclusion issue.
In Indianapolis on May 6 officials examined how the Ku Klux Klan supported Ed Jackson as the Republican gubernatorial nominee. Early returns from the May primary were incomplete, but observers believed the Klan held a majority of the 1,350 convention delegates and would shape party reorganization and platform at the May 21 22 state convention.
Marshalltown May 8 The Iowa State Sunday School council of religious education hears that the executive council set a twelve month budget of 20000 with disbursements last year of 17002.64 including 1000 borrowed. Over 3000 Sunday schools enroll 415000. 400000 Iowa children not enrolled. Burlington favored for 1925 convention. Polk county leads in attendance and mileage. Convention city to be chosen before this afternoon ends.
In Covington Kentucky on May 8 Walter B. Carey of Canton Ohio and M E Huth of Alliance Ohio, two of four co defendants with Congressman John W Langley, pleaded guilty in federal court to defrauding the government in a 1921 whiskey deal.
