Trial Date Set In Washington County Larceny Case
Joe A. Williams of Washington pleaded innocent in Washington County District Court to larceny of a motor vehicle. District Judge L.R. Carson set June 14 as the trial date and continued bond at $5,000. Williams demanded a speedy trial for the April 21 theft of a pickup in Crawfordsville. In other actions, Steven M. Sims of Clarinda was fined $300 for a first offense drunk driving conviction. DES MOINES UPI The Iowa House gave final approval to a measure mandating immunization for elementary and secondary students and licensed daycare children against six diseases with health and religious exemptions. A conscience clause amendment failed. The House also sent to the Senate a certificate of need bill for health care planners and providers and a two year snowmobile registration bill.

Rain totals aid farmers as fields halt work
In the Washington area officials recorded 1.31 inches of rain in the last 24 hours ending at 7 a.m. today. An earlier report noted .69 inches and a tenth inch fell between showers. Moisture halted field work at Morse, but farmers welcomed the timely rainfall as planting of corn proceeds.

Barney the vulture becomes unlikely mother to ducklings
In Cincinnati, Barney a male vulture at the zoo hatched one duckling and adopted a second. Keepers tested with a hard boiled egg then a fertile duck egg, which hatched a day later. Barney now guards the duckling as if its parent, officials say.
