The Senate refused to consider the conference report on the tariff bill and sent it back to conference for further talks. Democrats balked at Chairman Smoot's partial agreement, pressing for full agreement on export debenture and flexible tariff provisions as two key sticking points.
Charles Noecker was found guilty of assault and battery and fined $386 and costs by Justice J. B. Dey in Brighton after an attack on Leonard Johnson on a Washington street. Attorneys Michels and Wilson gave notice the case would be appealed to the district court. County Attorney Morrison prosecuted.
Dr. John L. Marker of Davenport spoke on mental diseases at the Washington county medical society monthly gathering. The group endorsed Dr. W. S. Kyle for coroner in the June primary. County dentists attended as guests and attendance was good despite threatening weather.
American Legion posts approve junior baseball for youths under 17 as part of a nationwide program. A committee led by Commander Charles Denison will organize teams and engage local youths while a separate plan to form a Boy Scouts troop under Legion auspices is tabled for now. Memorial Day decorations are planned with a 13 member committee, and a citizenship visit to Des Moines will take high school students from area towns to the state capitol with Governor Hammill greeting them.
Junior high gears up for year end events with an exhibit of manual training sewing and art works in the auditorium Friday seven pm. The band under Milburn McKay will accompany the display and class track meet follows the exhibit. The Spanish operetta The Toreadors directed by Elfriedo Cartano features eighth graders led by Harold McFarland Vera Stutsman and others. Tickets available from grade eight students.
A Texas cyclone outbreak left Nordheim and Forst among the hardest hit with 65 deaths reported by relief workers. The storm crossed into Oklahoma, destroying dozens of homes, with Oklahoma City and surrounding oil fields also affected and hundreds injured.
Oliver W. Stewart president of the Flying Squadron Foundation will speak at 4 p m Sunday May 11 at United Presbyterian church in a union effort of churches to promote prohibition enforcement. Stewart editor of the National Enquirer is a nation known advocate for the cause and a former head of the Flying Squadron. The meeting is free and open to the public with a men's chorus and minister's quartet. Dr F W Eastwood will preside.
May 7 Crawfordsville reports the United Presbyterian missionary meeting, moved from Thursday May 8 to Friday May 9 due to Miss Minner’s late arrival. Local residents Mrs Bessie Reed Green and Marvel of Hills Iowa visit Eli White and Ralph Rees homes. Everette Twinam to resume trip to Washington state. Mrs Mina Sommer and four sons plus Essa and Lois Harper spend Sabbath at Richard Bennett home in Hedrick.

The Masons of Washington awarded the general contract to T S Willis of Janesville Wis for 50 480 and electrical wiring to Metcalf Co of Anamosa for 1 972 and plumbing heating to Ream Carson of Washington for 6 717 total 59 169 with work to start next week and occupancy hoped by Sept 15.
Musical organizations of the high school will furnish the program at the school auditorium this evening. The event begins at 8 15 with the high school orchestra, then the girls trio, boys glee club, solos by Wilma Walker and the junior college boys quartet.
Washington county republican committee calls caucuses in each precinct this week to choose delegates to the county convention and one committeeman and one committeewoman per precinct. Delegates allotted by precinct. names must be filed with county auditor Kihel Greeian by May 12 for ballot printing.
John J. Ethell of Bloomfield Iowa will deliver the principal address at a Friday dinner in the United Presbyterian church. The event celebrates the end of a twelve week Sunday school attendance contest shared by Methodist and United Presbyterian men. Charles Stewart will toast the winners. Ralph Shannon and Richard McCleery will toast near-winners, with J H Peet presiding. The Shields orchestra, juggling act, and banquet program accompany the evening. If all attendees from the contest participate, over 550 men will attend.
A group meeting of District No. 210 E S will be held at Sigourney on Thursday May 8. The banquet will be served at 6 30.
Roe, aged twelve, enjoyed his first evening party despite a slow beginning. His mother asked how the event went, and he replied that it started slowly but improved, becoming quite light-hearted toward the end.
The Senate rejected President Hoover's nomination of John J. Parker as associate justice. The 39 to 41 vote ends a months long battle marked by strong opposition from organized labor and African American groups and requires a new nominee to fill Justice Sanford's vacancy.
The Washington chapter of the D A R voted to support the eighteenth amendment at their annual meeting. They appointed a resolutions committee and will forward them to the district for fall action. A protest followed a national congress decision. Members donated ten dollars to the Y W C A and furniture for an upcoming auction in Cunningham room next Saturday. Officers were mostly re-elected except chaplain and Marian who could not serve another year.
April 6 report lists Olland Spalding and Earl Balderson delivering hogs at Rubio. Chester Rice visited Fairfield on business while Floyd Johnson stayed with cousins. Fred Simms ill with quinsy hospitalized. Families shared dinners and visits across Germanville Brighton Hutchinson and Des Moines, including the Brays Statons and Hamptons with relatives and mothers visiting.
