The French liner Lafayette, 3394 tons, from Corunna to Havana, is captured off Havana by the gunboat Annapolis after a chase under blockading fire. The vessel carries passengers and cargo possibly including contraband of war. escorted to Key West by the Wilmington.
Sun shines on Camp Tanner as weather keeps men in ranks. The Fifth regiment N G under Colonel Culver completes enlistments and officers are examined. The Third regiment begins enlistments with Captain Preston of Joliet commanding Company BB. First battalion under Colonel Young leads the cavalry.
The Annapolis leads a chase with the Wilmington Newport and Morrill closing in as the French liner shows it will run for Havana. The Annapolis boards the Frenchman, but the vessel then tries to escape toward Havana. The gunboats train their guns as the liner halts and resumes steam toward the harbor.
