Nursing home boom raises Iowa concern
Des Moines reports a rapid rise in nursing and custodial care homes in Iowa. F W Pickworth of the State Health Department warns the increase, nearly tripling beds from 10 697 in 1957 to 30 264 by April, risks thinning qualified staff and lowers care quality. He cites profit motives and community pressure as key drivers and urges keeping the elderly in normal society rather than institutionalizing them.
