Dennis Eakins aged seven attempted to vacuum a parakeet named Mrakeet while cleaning bird seed from a living room floor. His mother intervened before the bird could be drawn deeper.Neighbors then freed the bird, which emerged unharmed from the machine.
Senator Gillette argued at a Democratic National Committee meeting that Geneva harmed U.S. leadership and the anti Communist front. He blasted the administration for mass retaliation rhetoric and urged United Nations action on Indochina.
Sen. Rourke B. Hickenlooper told a Princeton audience he remained unsure of the issues in the Army McCarthy hearings. He called the hearings a waste of time and a regrettable hassle while asserting the impact on U S foreign policy has been exaggerated. He defended the administration's economic policies against doom prophets and liberals noting inflation was checked by fiscal policy and recession did not occur.
Washington county invites eighth grade students to a free Saturday night event at the Youth Center hall in Washington. The center opens at 8 p.m. every Saturday and, after attendance, eighth graders gain access to future Youth Center events throughout high school. It is located over the McLellan store on the east side of the square.
Washington County records no polio cases since the year began. John Phleger, county chairman of the March of Dimes, warns parents to watch for symptoms as the situation evolves. Local chapter funds total about $5,500 to aid polio patients, with £655 spent since January on patient aid and partial wheelchair payment.
Waltonians from Louisa and Washington counties discussed an appreciation dinner for Lake Odessa development promoters. Larry Foster begins his 14th business year as proprietor of the Foster Radio Television shop in Washington. He arrived from Biggsville Illinois on May 6 1940 after five years in Bigesville. He chose Washington on strong sales praise and has never repented the move. The shop sits at 118 North Iowa Avenue with Mrs Foster and Wal Bickford helping run the business.
Des Moines patrolmen checked 54.1 vehicles at 30 points on Iowa highways in a first in a series to ensure summer road safety. Tickets issued to 1,926 vehicles for 6,124 repair items. 241 drivers summoned in court for dangerous conditions. 26 warnings recorded for traffic violations. one arrest for driving with suspended license.
Atty. Gen. Herbert Brownell Jr says a letter introduced in the Army-McCarthy hearings is unauthorized use of secret FBI information. He states McCarthy’s two page letter and the FBI memo it drew from should remain private, noting Hoover did not write the document and the letter contains evaluative content not authored by him.
Geneva reports say French plea for a mercy truce to allow evacuation of about 1,200 wounded at Dien Bien Phu was initially rejected by Viet Minh. French Foreign Minister Bidault expected a favorable Communist reply, while Laniel's government faced a confidence vote in Paris.
Cecile Glendine Evans 27 told police her husband Forrest Evans 31 beat their baby over finances, then she shot him with a shotgun as he lay on a bed in their three room Columbus home. She said the man had been drinking and had not provided food.
Detectives investigated a downtown restaurant incident where Leo Beverly a 30 year old Negro delegate to the CIO United Packinghouse Workers convention said he was slugged by an unidentified person as he dined with two Negro friends in Sioux City. The assault occurred as antidiscrimination measures were being discussed and delegates asked Mayor George Young to address the episode.
Jennett Twinam 82 died after a short illness at her Crawfordsville home. Funeral service set for 2 p m Saturday May 8 at Crawfordsville Federated Presbyterian church with Rev Ernest Smith officiating. Burial in Crawfordsville cemetery. Survived by son Merle and daughter Vedam both of Chicago, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Pat Brown 69, formerly of Washington, died Tuesday in Rock Island. Funeral services set for 10 a m Friday at Kodesen funeral home in Rock Island. Survived by wife, daughter, three sons Dennis Oral Ralph, two grandchildren, and brothers Bill Crown of Ainsworth and Martin of Washington.
Lloyd A. Luers Sr. 51 of Dutch Creek township died at 3 20 am in Mercy hospital Iowa City after major surgery. Funeral 2 30 pm Saturday May 8 at Sherman's funeral home with Dr. Arthur Peters officiating. Burial in Oak Ridge cemetery. Survived by his wife Ruth and six children, plus his parents and 10 grandchildren.
The American Legion and Auxiliary visited the Iowa City Veterans Hospital on Wednesday night to entertain patients. They provided bingo prizes, piano entertainment, and 44 dozen cookies with punch. Notable participants included Commander Tommie Tucker and a long list of local supporters and volunteers who worked both regular shifts and with the visiting group.

Washington high school presents its final year concert tonight in the auditorium. Vocal director Robert Ferrell leads the chorus with Melvin Hill directing the instrumental group. A joint chorus and band number with a guest bass player closes the program. season tickets honored.
Rep. H R Gross of Iowa declares no American troops should be sent to Indochina to aid France. He cites French colonial oppression and argues the United States must not shed American blood to sustain that system. He blames Britain and France for opposing UN action to protect trade with Communist nations.
State Senator Carl T. Anderson of Wellman will be guest speaker at a Young Married group gathering at the Farm Bureau office on Saturday evening May 15. He will discuss gubernatorial candidates on the June Iowa primary ballot. Leroy Veggy and Mrs Veggy lead the program.
About 90 members and guests attended the Washington Golf and Country Club dinner to welcome new members Jim Seifer t Gilbert Mills Clint Hensel and Skip Adkins though Adkins could not attend. Mrs Frank Meligart oversaw the dinner kitchen and spoke on plans for the year. The first men s stag night is set for May 14 with reservations due May 12.
