A 13 person UP-A fishing schooner reported being crushed by ice 30 miles north of Port Heiden in Bristol Bay Alaska. The captain said the vessel was hemmed in by an ice pack and taking on water in the stern. Coast Guard cutter Bittersweet was sent from Cold Bay to aid, expected to arrive about 19 p.m. PST. An Army B-17 from Fort Randall was also dispatched to locate the ship.

Barbara Schirmer 9, daughter of Mr and Mrs Francis Schirmer of near Greeley, was killed when a school bus struck in front of her home in Manchester Iowa yesterday.
