George Snyder aged 21 died at Swallum hospital from an accidental gunshot wound. He was shot with a .22 caliber automatic at the farm home of Omer Oqust three miles south of Storm Lake. The bullet penetrated his hip and lodged near his backbone.
Luther S. Watson, 28, a factory worker, failed to appear for induction. He said he would join any military branch to benefit humanity but not the war effort. The local board notified U S District Attorney T B Diamond, who will decide the next step.
In Keokuk a one day old baby, Harry Morgan Corry, was officially welcomed as a citizen of the world. His father, C. M. Corry, presented him with a ration book entitling him to buy half a pound of sugar weekly. The sugar rationing program nears its halfway point with over a million applications in Iowa.
Davenport Soldiers orphans home operating cost for the year ending June 20, 1941 was 215752.45 dollars. Average cost per inmate rose by 91 dollars.
A federal court jury valued the FW Fitch Co farm near Des Moines at 117000 after the government set a price of 113200 for the land. The company claimed 208000, but the jury awarded 117000, leaving a shortfall of 3800 from the government's figure.
Twelve Journal carriers received gold bars for selling 131.20 or more in war savings bonds at the American Legion meeting last evening in Legion rooms. Commander S W Easter presided and presented the awards to the carriers. The post reports Boys State and summer activities and notes the 1942 National convention in New Orleans has been canceled with location for the business meeting uncertain.
The American light cruiser Marblehead limped into an east coast port for repairs after a 3month voyage covering about 13,000 miles. The ship, damaged in Japanese air attacks near Balikpapan, Borneo on February 4, refuted enemy sinking claims with crew endurance and captain’s leadership.
Paul V. McNutt, head of the War Manpower Commission, warned the United States faces a supreme test in mobilizing 19,500,000 additional workers to more than double the war industry labor supply within a year. He called large scale migrations into war industry centers necessary as American armed forces are expected to reach 4,000,000 by end of 1942, creating a staggering manpower task to equip them with planes guns and ships.
Seven Republican state candidates have accepted invitations to a Washington County Republican Women’s Club dinner at 6 30 PM in the YMCA community room tomorrow. Attendees include Lieut Gov Bourke B Hickenlooper Cedar Rapids candidate for governor Mark Thurnburg Emmetsburg candidate for U S senator John Olson Calmus and H L Peyton Logan for secretary of state Arthur J Secar Keosauqua for secretary of agriculture and David B Long Des Moines for commerce commissioner Carlan Foster Mr Pleasant for state senator and others are expected. Republican leaders scheduled to attend.
Four Chicago based musicians Leonard Sorkin Bernard Senescu Sheppard Lehnhoff and George Sopkin performed as the Fine Arts string quartet in Washington for the third and final concert of the Washington Concert League series. The four violins and cello impressed a rain soaked audience with encores and mutual enjoyment. Mrs A E Baldrige spoke during intermission noting no ticket campaign for next season due to unsettled conditions and expressed hope for a future series. Walter L Larsen served as managing editor.

The National Concert League director, who supplied the concerts, urged a further season of high quality music to develop appreciation among youth. He stated the program avoids popular tastes and brings only enduring art, welcoming such music to the community.
Despite heavy rain, Washington residents registered for sugar at Lincoln and Stewart schools, totaling 2,680 over two days with 756 and 805 registrations at the two sites on the latest day. County totals reached 14,024 after 3,693 registrations the previous day, as officials push for statewide completion by week’s end.
W M Metzger of Davenport was fined 300 dollars and costs after a drunken driving incident in Washington county. He started from Conesville, drove west on highway 92, veered off past Ainsworth into a ditch, rolled the pickup loaded with sweet potatoes, and was arrested by Sheriff M Putnam. He appeared before Justice J F Boyee, was bound over to the grand jury, later offered to plead guilty, and received two weeks to pay. Judge Frank Beebly, holding court at Sigourney, imposed the fine and costs and ordered payment within two weeks.
In observance of National Music Week the high school mixed chorus will be presented by Boyd E. White in its annual spring concert Friday evening. The concert is open to the public with no admission charge and begins at eight o'clock in the high school auditorium. Mr. White directs vocal music in the local schools. In addition to selections by the chorus, the program may feature other performances.
The Washington County Farm Bureau board backed an anti inflation pledge discussed in Washington. The board and its legislative committee signed the pledge and sent it through the Iowa Farm Bureau federation to President Roosevelt.
Mrs Phoebe Lucretia Porter 88 died at 6 29 pm at her daughter Mrs Frank Crone’s home 1103 South Iowa Washington. Born Feb 8 1854 near Sweet Springs Mo she married Silas Drake Porter May 18 1873. Survived by daughter Mrs Crone two sons Frank B Porter and Charles H Porter and two grandsons. Funeral 10 30 am Friday at Black Waterchapel Sweet Springs with Rock Island train at 4 pm Thursday rendezvous.
The Wisconsin Public Service Commission denied the Wisconsin Telephone Company request for a 290,900 dollar rate increase in the Madison area citing wartime emergencies. It said duties for utilities should be frozen within reasonable limits while maintaining relief from other rising necessities. The company, a subsidiary of AT&T, sought higher base exchange rates and changes to metered and unlimited service.
Seventy five American citizens sail on May 28 from Stockholm aboard the Prisholm chartered to repatriate American and Japanese diplomats and nationals. The ships are said to carry additional passengers from Finland Norway and Denmark.
Japanese artillery and assault troops breached Corregidor fortress after 27 days of resistance under General Jonathan M. Wainwright. About 7,000 American defenders surrendered Manila Bay defenses as battles flare from Australia to Madagascar. Burma and Madagascar fronts see Japanese advances and Allied countermeasures near Antsirene.
An advanced first aid course will start Thursday at 7 30 PM at the YMCA. About 130 who completed the standard course are invited to enroll. Dr Keith Droz will teach a ten hour course, two hours per session, with classes likely twice weekly.
