St Louis May 6 Thirty two witnesses summoned by Attorney General Crow to testify before Chief Justice Durgess as Missouri investigates the beef trust. Deserters Escape After Attacking Fort Sheridan Sentry

Two prisoners A. E. Butterfield and Robert Haydon at Fort Sheridan sprang on a guard, disarmed him, tied his hands, and fed him before turning him loose. Sentenced to the guard house for desertion, they escaped with the sentry George Smith in pursuit. The incident sparked a large search by about 100 soldiers.
