Driverless car involved in four-vehicle crash near Washington
A driverless car starting with a hot-wire technique on Marion Avenue south of the square caused a four-vehicle crash at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Mrs. Mary Farlowe lifted the car hood and wires, the car lurched into a motorcycle owned by Dana Miell, then pushed Cary Wagler’s car into a pickup truck owned by Joe Te Bockhorst. The only passenger was Mrs. Farlowe’s young son. Damage estimated at $2,350.

Start course in cardiac care
A group of 28 area nurses and ambulance emergency medical technicians began an intensive seven week course in advanced cardiac care making the first accredited ACLS program in Iowa If on schedule the training could save lives and improve local emergency services The course runs Tuesday and Thursday nights at Washington County Hospital through June 18 with instructors Loving and Gloor aided by a grant from the County Board of Supervisors.

Strong winds ripped through the Washington area sweeping south and east of the city damaging several farms near Wyman and Crawfordsville. A 40 by 80 foot cattle shed on Donald Kracaw’s farm was torn from its foundation and scattered. a power line was downed, cutting electric service briefly. Barns and sheds at Harold Conrad, Gomer, and Alfred Davis farms were also damaged, with tree limbs blown down. Rain accompanied the storm, with local gauges showing 1.8 inches versus 0.69 inches officially recorded nearby. Mennonite Disaster Service crews and neighbors aided cleanup.
