No pay for cans anti litter bill fails in committee
A Des Moines bill to provide a 2 cent redemption for each beer can or bottle failed to clear a Senate Judiciary Committee. Sponsor Sen. Donald McGill said the plan would curb roadside litter and encourage redemptions by groups and youth. Six senators voted for, seven against. the measure was sent to the floor without recommendation after an amendments requiring distributors to establish redemption centers.

Wall Collapse Pins Dozen At Illinois Atomic Plant
A wall collapsed at an $80 million atomic power plant under construction along the Mississippi near Cordova Illinois pinning about a dozen workers. Four injured required hospitalization and four were treated at Moline Public Hospital. No deaths were reported. Workers were employed by Gust Newburg Construction for General Electric in a project for Commonwealth Edison and Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric.
