In Chicago two youths used a 10 foot pole to reach a purse left on a dining room table as Mrs Anna Cerda was robbed of $20.
A Des Moines juvenile court heard a 12 year old boy claim he earned from five to twenty five dollars daily by gambling dice with grown men at the city dump after skipping school. The court took the boy into custody and confiscated his winnings.
Voters in the Belmond Community School District approved a 220000 bond for a new grade school at Goodell a vocational building and bus barn at Belmond land and improvements Moulton approved a 22000 bond for a vocational agriculture addition Coburg rejected a 65000 bond for a new school gymnasium and classrooms with 108 92 votes short of 60 percent.
Iowa City the University of Iowa amateur stuntman Tom Ecker 20 of Waverly called off a Houdini style escape from a nailed pine box in the Iowa River after County Attorney Tucker warned possible prosecution. Dean Faunce warned university action if the stunt caused trouble with the law. Ecker rose to national notice last summer by hitchhiking 2000 miles.
The official city hostess on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce welcomed three new Washington families. Charles Beiderbecke and wife moved from Davenport to 311 East Main in a Rukgaber apartment. he is a Burlington Paper sales rep. David Moore and family relocated to 1015 East Main from Cedar Rapids. Moore is Montgomery Ward assistant manager and photography hobbyist. Peggy 5 and Michael 2 attend Stewart. they belong to the Baptist church. Wesley Freel and wife moved to 609 East Main. he drives trucks for Washington Concrete and she works as bookkeeper at Nicola and Harmon. Freel hunts in spare time. they are Baptist Church members.
Springfield Illinois officials test a polio vaccine they claim may be at least as good as the Salk vaccine. Dr Ruth Church notes ongoing tests before claims. Illinois uses UV killed polio virus, unlike Salk’s chemical killed virus, with 260 Morgan County children vaccinated last year and booster shots planned this year.
Rev Halsey Wakelin of Washington elected to the stewardship committee of the program council of the Iowa Society of Christian Churches during the 109th annual convention at University Christian Church Des Moines. L E Dunlap of Washington chosen as member at large for a 3 year term on the State Board of the Iowa Society of Christian Churches.
In Saigon a Diem backed provincial congress fractured amid discord as southern delegates boycotted and centrals pushed to depose Emperor Bao Dai. A rival Revolutionary Council congress urged firing Bao Dai and establishing a provisional republic under Premier Diem. Violence flared in Saigon amid the split.
The Public Health Service reports eight new paralytic polio cases, bringing the year total to 1,452. California, New York, Arizona, West Virginia, and Louisiana record new cases. last week saw 147 additional cases, with a 40 percent rise from the prior week.

Harry A Montgomery Sr. 84 of 615 West Jefferson Street died at 6 30 p m Wednesday from accidental poisoning after taking the wrong bottle while dosing himself Friends and relatives remember his years on the Washington city council and his work in real estate and hardware He was born April 24 1871 in Fairfield and married Belle Stewart October 15 1896 Survivors include his wife a daughter Helen Fitzpatrick a son Harry A Montgomery Jr and a granddaughter Helen L Fitzpatrick The service will be Friday May 6 at Jones funeral home with burial at Elm Grove cemetery. Coroner ruled accidental death no inquest.
Dr Frank Haffa a 72 year old retired Waterloo dentist paid 4000 to the estate of Arvey Leeper in an out of court settlement of a 20000 suit filed by Leeper’s estate administrators. The settlement relates to Haffa's 1953 fatal shooting conviction.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles testified optimistic about peace in the Far East and noted small signs of possible shifts toward peace in Communist policy. He cited Bandung as influencing China to consider less violent tactics while warning Red China will press subversion elsewhere. He urged continued economic aid to free Asian nations and described global expectancy as wartime allies seek tolerable relations.
