University of Iowa co-eds replicate last fall's men week by designating May 8 through 12 as leap week. They will wear sweaters and slacks, initiate dates, pay for events, and observe etiquette rules for men students. The week builds to the annual May frolic where the girls host.
Dr. Harry G. Plum of the State University of Iowa history department will take a summer leave of absence to conduct archival research in London England. A 45 year department member he will study late Stuart Puritanism in London archives.
Sioux City 2 year old Robert Leas McMullen choked to death as his family finished a meal. Fire department inhalator squad failed to save him. parents said a piece of potato caused the tragedy.
Ray E B Trussell of Toledo, a junior at the State University of Iowa, won the Iowa State Medical Society prize for an obstetrics and gynecology research paper. The award honors the best medical investigation presented by a student.
Elliott Goodwin, 31, died on the Jim Bevins farm when his clothes were caught in steel lugs on a tractor attached pulverizer. The accident threw him beneath the moving machinery.
Sioux City attorney Ray mond S Hill received a $350 judgment for defending Henry Lang in a Le Mars criminal case. Lang, also of Sioux City, was sentenced to six months in jail. Hill quipped I’ll need coal before he gets out.
The National Board of Fire Underwriters urged Outumwa to recruit 11 more firefighters before reopening the East End fire station, currently unused. Safety Commissioner Harry F. Swenson notes the force has only 10 men and cites pressure after the J. C. Penney Co. fire losses and the Helmick family tragedy on April 22.
Black Hawk county records show April direct relief cost at 8510 dollars, down from 13259.32 in April 1938 and 13489.70 in March 1939, with a 5020.22 reduction versus April last year. Excludes medical and dental bills, which also declined.

The body of Edward L. Schneider, missing associate of Thomas J. Pendergast, was recovered from the Missouri River in Kansas City. His car, containing death by own action notes, was found on the Fairfax bridge. his brother-in-law identified the body. The FBI had led a nationwide search and had doubted suicide despite the notes. Schneider was secretary treasurer of a Kansas City concrete firm.
Iowa City May 5 Prof Mason Ladd of the Iowa law faculty was named dean to succeed Wiley B Rutledge recently named to the DC court of appeals by President Roosevelt Ladd is 41 and the son of Judge Scott M Ladd and brother of Judge Lou Ladd of Des Moines district court
Memorial Day committee co chairs Dr. C C Reister a Spanish American War veteran and Dr P L Etter a World War veteran say preparations for May 30 1939 will begin shortly. The observance traditionally includes a forenoon program a parade from the square to the cemeteries grave decorations and speeches.
The Y W C A announces its annual membership drive will take place next Tuesday May 9. The drive committee includes Etha Dawson Mrs Leland Carris and Irene Yard with Mrs A E Atchison acting as president in Dawson's absence. Ward leaders Irene Ward Second ward organizer Mrs Thomas and a list of special workers are named with plans mirroring prior years.
Iowa coal miners walked away from state mines today awaiting a New York agreement. Morgan Thomas of the mine workers union says about 8,909 Iowa miners are affected, with roughly 3,600 at work yesterday as maintenance crews keep mines in condition while Louis Boldini of Albia leads in New York contract talks.
An afternoon crash at the court house corner involved a car driven by Don Stateman and a truck driven by Rex Nickerson. Both vehicles had minor damage with no injuries reported. The list of names appears to document special workers and ward officials connected to local organizations and institutions.
Borden Milk chose purebred Holstein Princess Mercena Ormsby Dixie from Maplecrest farms for a New York World's Fair display. Thirty cows, twenty U S and ten from Canada, will be milking publicly three times daily to showcase sanitary milk handling and product processing.

Des Moines reports Arthur Shepard, almost two, shows improvement as his father Jess Shepard visits his hospital bed. Attendants at Breadlawn Contagious hospital say the child’s condition grew decisively better following the reunion with his father.
Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes announced no parking signs will be placed at five o clock this evening around the square curbing. The signs stay until early tomorrow morning to allow thorough cleaning of the curbing while cars are removed.
Additional recitals are set for next Saturday afternoon May 13 in observance of national music week. Carolyn Hamilton will present her voice pupils at 1 p.m. at her home. Helen Harvey will feature her piano pupils at 2 p.m. at her home. The University of Iowa chamber orchestra will perform Monday evening at 8 o clock with free admission. a silver offering will be taken to defray expenses.
James Allen of Indianola was appointed superintendent of the Iowa motor vehicle division. He will earn 2700 dollars yearly, lead 37 employees, and oversee dealers, non resident licenses, stock shipping, and registrations indexing. Allen succeeds T Harr Vicker, dismissed by Karl Fischer.
Relatives located Shepard near Chariton where he had traveled in a scavenger truck and trailer in search of work at a hospital.
Poland answered Hitler through Foreign Minister Joseph Beck, rejecting the return of Danzig and a highway across the Polish corridor as one sided. Beck pledged firmness yet a willingness to negotiate with Germany if peaceful methods prevail, while parliament prepared emergency powers for President Moscicki.
Washington high school glee club directed by Ruth Stewart earned a first rating at the state music festival in Iowa City. Center ville and Iowa City high schools also received first ratings in the same class. Lone Steele, a contralto soloist, took a second rating while North Des Moines high and Franklin high of Cedar Rapids earned the first ratings in solo. Steele will compete in the string bass event. marching band performances conclude with a parade at the University of Iowa stadium tomorrow.
Mary Finney sister of Mrs Richard Stewart will arrive tomorrow night from Chicago. Sunday Mr and Mrs Stewart and daughters Patty and Jngynda Mae and Miss Finney plan to visit Rev M Todd MacDonald home in Indianola. The Finneys will then depart from Indianola for a several week trip to the west coast.
