State mining inspector Marvin B. Ross says Iowa coal holds promise as new refining methods cut sulfur, and gasification could add value. He notes 1971 production at 988,887 tons, far below the 1917 peak, with coal mainly used for electricity. Industry faces sulfur, costs, and competition from petroleum and natural gas.
