World's largest birdhouse claimed in Wisconsin

James Schacht built a six by eight by four foot three eighths inch plywood birdhouse hotel for purple martins using more than 600 carriage bolts. His wife quips that birds receive better care than they do.

Three Red Attacks Hit DMZ Posts in Vietnam War

UPI reports three sharp Communist assaults on U.S. forces near the DMZ in Vietnam. An armored patrol near Con Thien was struck wounding six, an OH58 Kiowa helicopter was shot down killing one crewman and wounding two, and rockets hit a U.S. artillery base near Gio Linh with light casualties. The U.S. command noted no fatalities in the first and third actions, did not disclose casualties in the rocket strike, and reported a Buddha birthday truce announced by the South Vietnamese government for 24 hours.

Video cameras boost teaching with new replay tools

Washington Community School system buys a video tape recorder funded in part by the National Defense Education Act Title 11. Speech teacher Michael Kramme uses the VIR in drama class to let students review performances. Chemistry and art teachers plan to use it for demonstrations and missed experiments. The setup includes two recording decks and two monitors shared by the high school and junior high, funded mainly by the local budget. previously, equipment came on loan from the Joint County system.

Iowa House approves school funding compromise to break deadlock

The Iowa House ended an eight day stalemate by approving 59 to 34 a compromise plan to fund high spending school districts. The amendment allows local districts to impose a referendum backed tax up to a state per pupil spending average, while rejecting a local income tax and property levy proposal. Proponents say it gives taxpayers a say and ties funding to growth, while critics warn of potential use to subsidize inefficient districts.

Washington City Council approves nursing home permit

Washington city council voted to grant a special permit for a proposed nursing home on East Polk Street after a Plan and Zoning Commission recommendation with conditions to protect nearby property owners. The body also approved a new municipal code and sign plans to open Fourth Avenue north of the high school to ease congestion, plus traffic control and local liquor and beer permit actions.

Swiss girl to join Washington High for next year

Brigitte Pluss, a 17 year old student from Ticino Tenero Switzerland, will be WHS AFS exchange student for the coming year. She speaks Italian French and German with limited English and plans to study psychology geography and math while enjoying riding skiing and swimming. Hosted by Edward A Peiffer family in August, WHS and local students are raising funds via a May 21 benefit concert to support AFS, with proceeds going to the exchange program.

MISS JEFFREY TO RETIRE AFTER 34 YEARS IN DISTRICT

Washington Community School nurse Eileen Jeffrey, known as Jeff to many, retires after 34 years serving Lincoln Stewart and other schools.
