Wm Havel Recovers From Electric Shock
William Havel a Ted Simons worker on the Odd Fellows building roof had a narrow brush with a live wire and received burns on his hand and lip before recovering. Fellow worker Harry Chamberlin also received a shock while helping separate Havel from the live wire but recovered quickly. Wires on poles pass close above the roof in the alley north of the square.

More than five hundred prisoners riot in a tear gas filled cell block at U S Disciplinary Barracks Fort Leavenworth. One man killed and a dozen people injured as guards maintain control. Affected inmates include 2183 Negroes give up mid morning with 213 men, all Negroes, emerging from cell block No 6 and moved to wings 4 and elsewhere. Col. Graham Parks reports the clash began when white inmates refused breakfast mixed with Negro inmates.

Two hundred fifty inmates surrendered before 9 a.m. as tear gas and police guards restored order after a two day race riot at the disciplinary barracks. One prisoner died at 6:40 a.m. and several guards and prisoners were injured during the crackdown.
Seek to Prevent Another Outbreak
In Leavenworth Kansas on May 3 inmates who surrendered were stripped of clothing and bodies searched in the central rotunda before transfer to new cells. Officers removed movable items to stop a recurrence of the outbreak. The man killed was Dewey D. Osborne a 39 year old white man from Mountain City Tennessee.
