Mrs. T. fiow ard Liljestrand, formerly of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, becomes the second woman to reside on Wake Island in the Pacific. She accompanies her husband, the island physician. Wake hosts a base for transocean Clipper planes.
At the Albert Sorensen farm in Harlan a team of horses fell into an 18 foot well while dirt was being added. One horse slipped in first and dragged the other in, dying in the well. In Cedar Rapids, Johnnie Valentine, 3, escaped serious injury after a 25 foot fall from an upstairs window, sustaining only a scratch on the left arm.
Prof Paul F. Cox head of ISU ceramic engineering for 18 years retires Aug 1 and plans to start a ceramics business in New Orleans. Dodd of Missouri School of Mines to replace him. A separate Cedar Rapids item reports Jacqueline Irvin, 4, burned over three fourths of her body playing with matches at an aunt's home and being helped by the aunt.
Karl Brown 47 of Nashua died at the Corn Belt Manufacturing Co. plant in Waterloo while helping remove a 40 foot metal smokestack. A falling pipe touched a power line and Brown was shocked and fell 25 feet to the ground.
Charles City legible report says Lamoine Corbin backed over his 4-year-old daughter Shirley Mae near her grandparents’ home as she darted to the car. He found she had only face scratches and the family rejoiced at the small injuries.
DES MOINES The Farm Mutual Insurance Co sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau federation will begin operations May 10. The annual convention voted unanimously to launch the company to handle automobile insurance after county units showed sufficient interest.
Grundy Center report says Dike Savings Bank shut after investigators found about $60,000 in shortages. Anton P. Lorenzen vice president notes a $17,000 unauthorized loan to the veteran cashier Ben H. Fletcher, 49, leading to his arrest after a monthlong probe into the bank’s affairs.
Des Moines reports 209 smallpox cases in 1939 across 4% of counties in April, a rise of 75 from March and markedly higher than February and January totals of 180 and 166. Dr. J M Hayek, director of the maternal and child health division, announced the figures.
Senator Clyde L. Herring of Iowa told a New York audience that some laws regulating business should be amended as they harm both employers and employees. He cited the National Labor Relations Act the Social Security law and the Fair Labor Standards Act and argued that arbitration of working conditions does not yield the desired results.
James M. Greene 76 longtime Columbus City resident died at his home following a week's illness. Surviving are his wife Imma Zimmerman Greene a son Faye Greene a daughter Mrs Gertrude Hanitt ten grandchildren three brothers and two sisters with a brother and three sisters deceased. Funeral at 2 pm Friday at the home with Rev. W A Bloomquist officiating burial in Columbus City Cemetery. He was born March 26 1865 in Washington County Tennessee and moved here about fifty years ago to farm.
Iowa Governor George A. Wilson announced the legislative delegation to greet Crown Prince Olav and Princess Martha at Decorah this weekend. The slate includes Senators J. Kirketey of Bedford Stanley Hart of Keokuk Leo Elthon of Fertile John Berg of Cedar Falls LL Forsting of Sioux City Ralph Benson of Jefferson Carl Stalin of Hamburg Edward H. Vrba of Cresco and Lt. Gov. B. B. Hickenlooper. Representatives chosen are W. P. Knowlton Decorah J. G. Odden Lake Mills Herman Knudson Mason City Herbert Hauge Des Moines Robert Blue Eagle Grove Claus Randall Manly O. N. Hultman Stanton and Speaker John Irwin Keokuk.
A Spanish American War veterans group attended the Leon Beatty post meeting with Frank Gray Sidney Smith Walter Crawford James Baird and Hugh McCleery. Reports covered district meetings and upcoming state activities for boys while music featured a junior college sextet.
Funeral services for tromer Paulgroves were held yesterday afternoon at Sherman's funeral home. Rev. W. J. Stevens officiated with a vocal solo by Marion George. Burial occurred at Ainsworth cemetery. Casket bearers included Ellis Swisher, Leroy Fread, Neal Smith, Russell, Howard and Howell Owens.
Arlington Daniels and Bob Turner were fined five dollars each by Mayor Lloyd Lytle after pleading guilty to creating a disturbance at the Anderson hotel early Sunday morning.
Des Moines reports the national Bureau of Standards assigns a five week wagon and truck scale testing in Iowa. Harry D. Linn assistant state secretary of agriculture says tests run with cooperation from the state department. The unit began work in Iowa April 24 after leaving Missouri.
Chicago reports show Iowa shipments topped the cattle market more often than any state in April. Clinton Plymouth and Dubuque counties supplied top lots with Hereford steers and heifers selling around 11.5 to 13.75 dollars per cwt, while Nebraska steers hit a yearly peak of 14.00 per cwt on April 26.
Renzo Sawada, Japan’s vice minister for foreign affairs, told U S and British envoys that Japan seeks a thorough reorganization of the Shanghai international settlement. He suggested the settlement could be abolished if reforms are not possible, citing changed conditions in China and widespread criticism of the current arrangement.

Decorah with 4500 residents buzzes as it nears the climax of hosting Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha of Norway. The town, a leading Norwegian culture center in the United States, aims to make the royals feel at home during their stay next weekend.
Keokuk banker E. A. Ebersole, president of the Iowa State Bankers Association, denounced the Reconstruction Finance Corporation at a northwest Iowa convention. He called the agency "the world's most famous monkey show" and said government controlled finance agencies drew customers from private banks.
Washington Y M C A held its annual meeting in the community room with re elected directors John Lemmon Ralph Livingston Charles Davis Claude Tuckey and Harry Ramseyer for three year terms. The program featured youth talks readings and a phonograph concert as part of a larger community effort coordinated by Y leaders.

Roosevelt plans no immediate action though air and naval base proposals near Mexico and Ecuador are studied.
Wayne Dawn was fined five dollars and costs by Justice of the Peace W. B. Eldridge for passing another car in a restricted zone on a highway. He had been picked up Sunday by Deputy Sheriff Stan Kiebley and ordered to appear for a justice court hearing last night.
John Barrymore files suit in New York Superior Court seeking an accounting of joint funds from his estranged wife Elaine Barrie and a separation. He asks for a listing of $300,000 in bonds and names Elaine Barrie’s parents in the action.
