Detroit reports patrolman Jay Moore stopped 28 year old Force Smith as his car zigzagged on the road. Smith admitted he was a wild driver after drinking. He was fined 25 and his license suspended for one year.
Mrs Ira Gastman, regional representative of the Washington Camp Fire Girls council, was elected to the National council at region seven’s annual meeting in Omaha Nebraska. Region seven includes Missouri Kansas Nebraska Colorado Wyoming and Iowa with 18 delegates on the council.
Washington county plans its annual pre school health conferences during May across communities. The program, organized by medical and dental societies with educators and parents, screens weights visions hearing teeth and refers children for physician exams. Parents must accompany children and attendance aids immunization planning.
Milledgeville Georgia reports a 65 year old businessman Marion Stembridge fatally wounded two lawyers he believed responsible for his legal troubles. Stembridge was killed by return fire after shooting Ennis and Bivins. The two lawyers died within minutes.
A Washington county group of 4-H members and leaders returned from Lake Aquabi after a two day camp work shop. The session trained 4-H personnel for their fall county camp programs with attendees focusing on outdoor cookery craft work and camp administration. Shirley Escher Tom Robb Melvin Booth Elouise Brown John Swenner Jim Elliott are named as participants.
The U S Department of Agriculture announced a re seal program for farmers with government loans on 1952 corn and oats. County PMA committees set deadlines for extending loans or converting purchase agreements to loans. Storage payments apply: 38 cents per bushel on corn and 10 cents on oats for the full year.
The Veterans Administration plans to raise the interest rate on VA guaranteed veterans housing mortgages from 4 to 4.5 percent for future loans, not existing ones. Approval by the Treasury secretary is expected before the change takes effect, with an estimated $600 rise in financing costs per GI home. The move may precede FHA rate increases as well. The VA also reminded veterans of GI loans with no down payment and up to 30 years to repay.
Funeral services for Hattie Ross were held at 2 p m Friday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Sullivan officiating. Pallbearers named Milton Donald Andrew and Willis Ross. Cal Wolf served as soloist. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery.
A small tornado moved through two Tennessee counties early today killing three and prompting warnings of more twisters across northern Georgia and northern South Carolina. The three Tennessee deaths bring the regional toll to 27 in 36 hours, with seven killed in Alabama, 17 in central Georgia, and hundreds injured while a thousand housed elsewhere. Damages exceed 15 million dollars as Meigs and McMinn counties report multiple fatalities and extensive destruction.
A Friday night tornado across central Alabama and into Georgia raises the death toll to 17 in the Macon area. Warner Robins receives emergency aid from the federal government and Red Cross as the disaster causes extensive damage including $15 million in Warner Robins. The storm tracked eastward about 40 miles south of Birmingham between Calera and Union Grove and hit Ashland’s outskirts where most fatalities occurred.
May issue of The Benner Family News notes rapid remodeling of the former Benner Food store in Washington and a new store in Mt. Pleasant. The Washington location will reopen with more selling space after a fire, with occupancy expected in about a month. Local residents follow the remodeling with interest.
Orville Francis Howard of 126 East Sixth Street Davenport is held on a $2000 bond on a third offense charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The arrest was made by the Washington county sheriff’s office and highway patrolmen while Howard sat dozing in his car four miles east of Washington on Friday.
Leon Beatty American Legion post will meet Monday evening to hear reports from the district meeting and plan Memorial Day activities.
The Army treated at Valley Forge Hospital in Phoenixville Pennsylvania a group of 20 freed American soldiers who may have been victims of Communist propaganda during North Korea captivity. They arrived by plane Friday night at Willow Grove Naval Air Station after a hush hush flight from Tokyo.
In Panmunjom Korea the communists requested a 48 hour recess after Lt Gen William K Harrison accused Gen Nam Il of making an untrue statement about the custody of anti red prisoners 46 918 in number. The communists said neutral powers India Pakistan Burma and Indonesia might take charge until a decision is made but refused to name a custodian nation unless those prisoners are transported there rather than kept in Korea.

Mrs. Gilbert Mills Mrs. Ed Hite and Mrs. Bill Nordyke traveled to Salem Friday evening after the death of their father Bert Williams who had been seriously ill for months. Funeral services are set for Monday at 2 PM in the Congregational church in Salem.
Washington county eighth graders will hold their annual commencement at the Methodist church on May 21. County superintendent Lester Krabill said the program will be announced soon, with the rural school choir featuring numbers as a highlight of the exercises.
Des Moines strikes halt nearly all major construction in the city and affect projects in seven other Iowa towns. About 1,000 workers are idle while 3,000 more refuse to cross picket lines, with pay demands ranging from 10 cents to 26 cents an hour plus welfare contributions.
Rep-prisoner Sgt. Harry A. Cutting described North Korean guards at death valley forcing wounded U.S. prisoners to surrender coats sweaters and other warm clothing. He recalled standing outside for hours in three to four feet of snow in December 1950 after being captured near Hamhung. He spent months crawling on hands and knees before a 13 day transfer to Camp No. 1 Chang song in April 1951.
Students in the vocal and instrumental music departments at Washington high school will present a joint program in the high school auditorium Tuesday evening May 5 at 8 o'clock. This will be the last program of the current school year and part of music week festivities.

Three Yugoslav airmen studying American jet engines in Chicago announced they would seek asylum in the United States defying orders to return home. They said they chose freedom and safety from Communist tyranny in the United States.
Funeral services for Clayton A Nicholson who died Friday in Monroe Illinois will be held in Washington Arrangements are still in definite but the body is being returned here to the Jones funeral He was born September 29 1880 the son of William and Nancy Jane Tucker Nicholson He was married March 28 1904 to Clara Putman She died March 12 1939 Nicholson was well known in the community as an evangelistic singer.
North Korean prisoners riot at the Panmunjom exchange center during Operations Little Switch as United Nations officers demand the release of 375 more ill prisoners. A U N liaison officer pledges completion of the exchange with 186 more prisoners.
Seven persons were killed and an eighth was critically injured in a headon collision on the ASB bridge over the Missouri River in Kansas City. Investigators described wreckage as twisted and difficult to identify and attributed likely causes to liquor and excessive speed.
