The Guest of Quesnay Chapter 111 at Les Trois Pigeons
The narrator returns to the inn to find a grand van from Dives and the "great man of science" with Professor Keredec and an enigmatic companion unseen by guests. In a tangle of secrecy, the pair keep to their rooms while Amedee spills rumors about the two men. The narrator befriends Amedee and slowly uncovers the puzzle of the gray haired youth with a singular air and his mysterious interest in a woman in a white hat, amid paintings in the forest and a lunch sausage mishap. The two men flee a tense encounter as the professor insists on discretion and dinner.
