The formal opening of the elab women's convention drew hundreds of delegates to the Simpson auditorium. The interior featured 50,000 entralites while representative United States women sat on the platform as cheerful greetings filled the scene.
The convention opened with two debated questions. A request by Mrs C T H McMahon of Salt Lake City to join the federation as a P I chapter delegate was denied vote by the board due to secret societies barred rule, though she kept a seat. Mrs Roberts of Salt Lake City, president of the Authors' Club, hoped to attend as a delegate but stayed home after resistance. A colored question loomed as a potential flashpoint with Utah prompting reports. Preliminaries included welcomes with Governor Gage. Mrs Rebee Dengs Lowe led introductions.
Six persons were injured in a collision between a street car on the Vilet street line and a switch engine at the Clinton street crossing of the Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul line in Milwaukee. Names of the injured were not fully reported.

Sheep and lambs receipts about 9 000 with western lambs at 5 50 to 7 15 and natives 3 75 to 6 30. East Buffalo reports mixed cattle and hog markets with hogs 6 60 to 7 30 and pigs to 6 50. St Louis grain notes higher bids for wheat corn oats rye and barley with nearby futures and cash prices.
Senate Cuban relations hearings interrogated Henry Havemeyer of the sugar trust about control over Cuban sugar and beet sugar competitors. He testified the trust does not own all Cuban sugar and admitted rivalry with beet sugar producers while describing price-fixing actions to regain trade and argue market dominance.
In Washington on May 2 the Senate debated the Philippine government bill with Carmack pressing to summon Aguinaldo Mabini and other Filipinos as witnesses to defend themselves. He charged the majority with biased aims while Funston and Taft testified about Aguinaldo’s alleged statements. The discussion touched on press coverage and party protection concerns as the April 1902 government receipts and expenditures report was released.
The total receipts reached 15 215 500 dollars while expenditures totaled 40 700 208 pounds, leaving a 4 910 000 dollar surplus for the month. In St Louis on May 2 the Mercantile Trust seeks an injunction to block William J. Lemp from disposing of 400 Merry stock shares to the Mississippi Valley Trust company. Lemp allegedly turned over the shares after an agreement with Mercantile, while Mississippi Valley sought a higher price to outbid Mercantile. Judge Ferris granted a temporary injunction with a return date set.
A fire destroyed parts of the Mettendorf Steel Axle plant on May 2 causing about 200000 dollars in losses. An agent for the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul railway vanished after the incident with reports that a man from Davenport may have been killed or injured. The company previously reported a 200000 dollar loss last November.
George Poppert, president of the George Poppert Manufacturing Co, marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Poppert family as they emigrated from Germany to the United States with a wedding at 2721 State Street. Annie Poppert, the divorced wife of his son Henry, married Poppert’s son’s former wife. Justice Piertan J. Ties officiated. The family history includes multiple divorce cases in Milwaukee and Kansas City.
In Indianapolis on May 2 Judge Waker granted an injunction and appointed William W. Sbrooks of New Albany as receiver in Louisville Banking Co. v New Albany Water Co. et al. Bond set at $10,000. Receiver to take possession and file an inventory within 15 days. City of New Albany restrained from paying water charges to New Albany Co. and to pay receiver instead. New Albany Water Co. barred from delivering property to Indiana Co. or joining mains under a lease dated March 41 1902. Notice of apportionment given.
A. J. Barr, a prominent Bloomington lawyer and former McLean county Democratic chairman, files for divorce. Details are sealed and the hearing occurred in chambers. Mrs Barr, described as a beautiful, wealthy woman known for golf and rifle marksmanship, is understood not to oppose the decree. Barr has been mentioned as a potential congressional candidate.
