Lisbon reports Spain's fleet destroyed off Cavite as Manila bombardment begins. dispatches from Madrid Washington and London detail heavy losses to Spanish vessels including Maria Christina and Don Juan de Austria. Civilians flee and cables to Manila are interrupted while Dewey’s victory is celebrated.
The two fleets at Manila included US ships Olympia a first class protected cruiser with 21 knot speed and heavy guns, Baltimore a second class cruiser at 20.6 knots with 8 inch and 6 inch rifles, Boston a second class cruiser at 15 knots with 6 inch guns, Raleigh a second class at 19 knots with 6 inch and 5 inch rifles, and Concord a third class at 17 knots with its battery.
