Secretary Byrnes told the big four foreign ministers the United States would cut its occupation forces in Austria and Italy to about 15 000 troops each. The U S would withdraw from Italy after the peace treaty is signed, while Soviet forces remain large in Austria. A dispute over an allied inspectorate for Italy arose, pitting Byrnes and Bevin against Molotov.

Washington High Band Competes In Little Six Festival Show
Washington high school’s 37 piece band joined seven schools including Fort Madison Keokuk Muscatine Ottumwa Fairfield Mt Pleasant at Muscatine for the Little Six conference band festival. Farm Price Index Rises to New Iowa Record
Des Moines May 1 The farm price index for Iowa last month reached 204, up three points and the highest since 1920. The crops index rose three to 194 while livestock edged up to 206. Corn at 1.03, wheat 1.06, hogs steady at 14.10, beef cattle to 14.80 as feeder margins tighten slightly.

Meat quota controls tied to black market fight
