In Fort Wayne Indiana Howard H Dewseese also known as John Morton pleaded guilty to a home burglary of Dr G W McCaskey. He admitted stealing a $400 diamond and was sentenced to ten to twenty years in the penitentiary He said he would go to prison to cure his morphine habit and explained he needed money for dope after pawned his swag in the same town.
South Bend Indiana May 1 six hundred Knights of the Modern Maccabees from South Bend Mishawaka Elkhart Goshen Laporte Gary War saw Fort Wayne Michigan City St Joseph Niles Buchanan Kalamazoo Three Rivers White Pigeon and other southern Midlin towns attend the largest meeting of the order in the area. A class of 200 candidates were initiated.
Ithaca May 1 James B Clarke a Cornell student wins the Prix de Monneur from the Society of French Professors of America for his articles on the negro question at Cornell. The work stirred debate among students and prompted anti Negro petitions while President Schurman affirmed that negro women have a right to live in Sage College.
Secret officers and a deputy marshal raided a farm near Worthington nine miles north of Columbus. They found molds for ten dollar gold pieces and silver coins, a forge and crucible. Marion Wilcox and Mahlon Sells were arrested. Sells admitted training to coin counterfeit money while imprisoned at Fort Sheridan.

Melvin Bigelow twelve years old was drawn into a grain car being loaded at the Cooley elevator in Reddick and suffocated. Efforts to rescue him failed and he was dead when found.

A vast blaze in Bangor Maine has laid waste much of the city. Reported to cover a radius of about half a mile early on May Day it destroyed Western Union and telephone lines and disrupted Postal service. Bangor, a major lumber and mill center with about 22,000 residents, sits on the Penobscot river and relies on its water-powered factories and bridges to move timber and goods.
Chicago May 1 Judge William Fenimore Cooper refused to issue an injunction against custodians of the 211000 stockyards fire relief fund. A receiver was sought by firemen widows who want immediate distribution. Hearing to be held later. Rosenthal represented the fund committee and John J Coburn for the widows. Widows attended in large numbers amid verbal clashes.

In Calumet Michigan on May 1 Joseph J Kestner thirty six and Thomas Dodge twenty three were killed by a rock fall after a blast in No 16 shaft of the Calumet and Hecla mine. Coroner jury finds neglect in testing the ground after the blast contributed to the deaths. Claude Gregory sought in Saginaw for Toledo mortgage fraud fled police but was recaptured after a chase along the riverfront.
Northwest farmers led by Senators McCumber and Smoot will march on the Senate Finance Committee in late week to oppose the Canadian trade bill. About 300 farmers, including Grangers from North Dakota led by former Senator Henry C. Hansbrough, will testify that ratification harms agricultural states. The two trainloads of farmers, described as a genuine agrarian demonstration, aim to pressure lawmakers in Washington.
Fifty five life term prisoners at Washington state penitentiary watched airships fly over the fair grounds two miles from the enclosure. Walter Brookins and Charles F.
