Cancer Crusade Opens April Campaign in Washington County
The Cancer Crusade in Washington County begins April 1 with about 50 volunteers at kickoff. Chairs Mr. and Mrs. Dale Caldwell lead the effort with Mrs. Caldwell directing the Washington City drive and Frank Kleese rural chairman. The county organization is led by Mrs. Art Witthoft, aided by Mrs. Gene Allen of Iowa City, and talks by Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Newport highlighted the meeting along with a film. Donations may be left at Washington State Bank with Juanita Hering. The county is divided into four sections with ward and neighborhood chairpersons coordinating volunteers across town and rural townships for the campaign featuring films and fundraising activities.

Library quilt project for National Library Week at Washington library
The Washington Public Library invites area women to join a Bicentennial quilt project during National Library Week starting April 5 at 1 p.m. in the youth room. Volunteers will sew T-Block quilt blocks, date the quilt, and complete piecing and quilting at the library. The finished quilt will be presented to Conger House later this year.

Bandits seize 1.6 million in Montreal armored robbery
Five bandits used a 50mm antiaircraft gun to force open a Brink's truck door beside the Royal Bank of Canada headquarters in Montreal.
