Double Crime and A Tragic Retreat in Teh Waterbury Ironton Area
A barber named William Argo shot seriously wounded Elen Barker in Waterbury and was wounded in return at Center Furnace near Ironton. Argo, a carpenter, had been the woman's former sweetheart and went to her residence as housekeeper J. J. Way’s. He fired five shots, one hitting Barker’s breast. Barker returned fire, striking Argo in the leg. Argo was arrested. In Chillcothe, Lorrest McCord, a 24 year old barber from Bournville, killed Charity Storts, 20, by slitting her throat and then cut his own throat. The killings occurred at Storts' home near South Salem after McCord drank heavily and attacked a companion with a beer bottle. He then killed Miss Storts in front of her mother, severing her head, and then slit his own throat. McCord and Storts had been longtime sweethearts. Authorities believe remorse followed the assault and murder led to the double tragedy.
