Firefighters responded to a morning alarm at the Jim Wagenknecht farm where a farrowing house burned down. The structure was destroyed and several sows and pigs perished. exact pig losses were not yet determined at noon.
Greg Hora a ninth grader at Washington Junior High School won the nomination for president of the Iowa Association of Junior High Student Councils and was elected delegate at large at a Burlington convention. He will represent the southeast district as delegate and presidential nominee at the state convention in Boone on May 7.
In Iowa City the urban renewal referendum for six million dollars failed despite a record turnout. Only 53 percent approval, below the required 60 percent, defeated the measure with 9,500 ballots cast. The bond package earmarked 5 million for a parking ramp and 1 million for street improvements.
Rep. Edward Mezvinsky of Iowa announced he will seek another term in Congress. He said his first term reaffirmed that Congress is the people’s branch and will be judged on his record. Nomination papers were filed in Des Moines as the announcement was made.
In ALLEMAN API voters in the North Polk School District approved a 565000 bond for a junior-senior high school addition by 723 to 415, while a 600000 elementary project failed 601 to 544 as it needed 60 percent. Construction start is uncertain due to seven residents filing suit to block bond sales.
Washington land once slated for an $11 million residential project failed to sell as bidders stopped at $900 per acre. Larry Duncan, sole owner, offered the 135.6 acre Busby farm with engineering plans but did not meet the bid threshold, signaling the possible end of the development plan. The property, rezoned for housing in 1973, remains agricultural as bidders preferred keeping it farmland.
In Washington Community School District talks, teachers push for a 12 to 14 percent average pay rise, seeking $450 base pay raise and a 1 percent salary index increase, while the board offers about 8 percent. A special meeting is set for next week to continue negotiations, with tentative health insurance accord and per diem pay for extended contracts.
Washington school district trustees named Ron Hackbarth Lincoln Elementary principal effective next fall after a 3-1 vote. James Lloyd Justine Hotle and Larry Robison supported, Gorham abstained, Bell opposed. Ray's support. leadership shelved the plan for fear of deficits, favoring food tax relief and higher inheritance tax exemptions instead. He plans to reintroduce if re-elected.
