Washington County Sheriff reports Pleasant Hill Christian Church in the southeast of Washington was vandalized Saturday night. Desks chairs and a dehumidifier were broken and debris scattered in the basement. The incident is under investigation.
Justice Department reports intermediaries sought up to 1 million to influence Senator John L McClellan to back Hoffa's parole. Hoffa, up for a parole hearing Wednesday, declined the offer. McClellan, opposed to Hoffa's release, said he was never approached. The plan reportedly died and no arrests were contemplated. Hoffa serves an eight year term for jury tampering at Lewisburg.
Iowa House Cities and Towns Committee approves a comprehensive home rule bill by a 17 to 0 vote. The measure rewrites all city code into a municipal code, granting local officials broader powers while retaining tax authority and lowering general obligation bond passage to a simple majority. An amendment on land strip upkeep passed 9 to 7 but did not reach the required 10 votes. House progress contrasts with Senate action, with Rep Don Alt calling the House version significantly better.
An intercepted memo from Des Moines Iowa addresses home rule as a topical issue for local couples and residents. The note notes that the home rule question stirs strong feelings among households and communities.
Communists sappers penetrated a U.S. artillery base about 50 miles southwest of Da Nang killing 33 Americans and wounding 76 in the day’s deadliest toll since February 1969. Reports also mentioned a failed Laos strike by South Vietnamese forces and public urging of North Vietnam invasion.
Vicky Benge daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Benge of 621 West Jefferson Street Washington was taken to an Iowa City hospital for injuries from a one car crash south of Washington at 12 10 p m today. The car driven by Beth Ann Richardson of Washington plunged off Coppock Road flew about 70 feet then into Crooked Creek turning end over end against the creek bank. The car owned by Donald Dean Bartholomew Washington route one was totally demolished. Benge was pinned in the wreckage and later transported to the hospital. Richardson was less seriously hurt and climbed from the wreckage. Benge’s injuries include a broken hip or leg. She worked at Wings Cafe in Washington.
Gov. Robert D. Ray announced the signing of a law to freeze school property taxes at current levels. The measure includes a $45 per student allocation or up to $30 million statewide to help districts offset rising costs for the next school year.
Two suits filed in the clerk of court seek damages over 100000 each. One suit involves an October 9 1970 auto accident west of Ainsworth in which Mrs James Johnson was killed. Deceased's husband as administrator sues Lawrence Dean Zehr. The other suit by William and Dorothy Stout seeks 101040 plus interest alleging unsafe equipment for applying anhydrous ammonia caused chemical exposure and injury.
Washington announces spring adult education offerings including physical fitness golf and tennis for all ages plus adult basic education literacy. Courses start the week of April 11 with tuition eight dollars per class. High school completion classes list psychology bookkeeping and anatomy with diploma credit. Registration is April 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. at the high school.
Iowans will decide in 1972 whether the governor lieutenant governor and four other state officials should serve four year terms instead of two. The House approved a minor amendment to ensure constitutional consistency, aiming to avoid future court challenges. The proposal was approved by both chambers of the 63rd General Assembly and requires identical action by two successive assemblies. Rep Elizabeth Shaw said the amendment secures constitutional validity.
