Civil service bill clears House panel but stalls in Senate

AFTRA Walkout Shuts Networks Amid First Strike

New York reports AFTRA members at NBC CBS and ABC walked out in a national strike their first in 30 years. The action disrupted news and on air talent across major cities with hundreds of reporters disc jockeys and announcers joining picket lines in rain and dawn.

Napalm Attacks End Tanker Torrey Canyon Blaze

Wreckage of the giant tanker Torrey Canyon exploded in flames as 56 RAF jet bombers swarmed over the seabed near Land's End England. The strike aimed to burn off oil spilling from the grounded vessel on Seven Stones Reef as crews battled the blaze amid high seas and a mass rescue and cleanup effort along the coast.

Dallas family tragedy ends with five dead

A 13 year old boy phoned police begging for help as his mother shot his brother in northeast Dallas. Police found 30 year old Nell Lee and her 12 year old son dead, and Russell 14 and his sister Rachel wounded. Russell and Rachel were hospitalized in serious to critical condition. Maurice E. Lee Jr. was away at work. The Rev. Wilfred Bailey assisted the distraught husband at the scene.

U S platoons repulse Viet Cong attack north of Saigon

In the Central Highlands near An Lao Valley U S Army 1st Air Cavalry Division with about 88 men beat back a 150 strong Communist assault using small arms and grenades. An American staff sergeant grabbed a satchel charge and hurled it back killing the two guerrillas who threw it. The three hour fight ended with the Viet Cong retreating into the jungle dragging dead and wounded.

County Historical Site Group Buys Dublin Store

A Dublin Community Center non profit has completed plans to purchase the old Dublin store at Dublin and move to repair and preserve it as a county historical site. W C Bill Robertson known as mayor of Dublin was named president with Mrs James Bond as secretary and Mrs Clifford Leeper treasurer. Directors include local township trustees Clifford Leeper Max Waterhouse and Lee Sanders. Pledges cover the purchase and roof. gifts urged to Leeper. The building may be refurnished with era appropriate items and used for township and club meetings.

Iowa Legislature approves reapportionment compromise

After weeks of party clashes the Iowa General Assembly approved a 10 member bipartisan commission to craft subdistrict plans for multi member counties and first passage of a constitutional amendment on legislative apportionment. The measure delays legislature size cuts to 1970 elections and requires court action if deadlines missed.

South Vietnam proposes talks with North on truce terms

South Vietnam rejects Thant nonconditional truce demand and pushes for immediate peace conference. Hanoi has not formally replied and criticized Thant for not distinguishing aggressors from victims in Vietnam. Saigon insists on agreeing terms before any ceasefire and says a Vietnamese representative could start talks within a week if North agrees. Thant urged a renewed Geneva framework to revive 1954 principles.
