A large downtown Marshalltown building suffered extensive damage as a fire swept through eight stores around 10 45 a m. No injuries were reported. Three pet monkeys escaped cages in the A B C Refrigerator Co section. one was rescued and none burned. Fire crews pulled the blaze under control before noon, preventing spread to nearby structures.
President Truman launches the Democratic 1952 campaign with the annual Jefferson Jackson Day dinner speech at the national armory. The event, broadcast by CBS and others, is expected to draw about 6 18 attendees including southern Democrats.
W C Robertson a board of supervisor candidate lists Brighton as his mailing address but resides on a farm west of Washington in Dutch Creek Township. The item clarifies his actual residence for the upcoming primary election.
The Kiwanis Club will sponsor the Kelly and Morris three ring circus at the old Chautauqua grounds on April 2. Tickets go on sale soon with blocks of children's tickets offered to underprivileged youngsters. Half of the proceeds from advance sales go to the Kiwanis, supporting club activities.
Seven Des Moines area trucking firms restarted operations today as most drivers and dock workers returned to work after a strike. A Midwest Operators Association official said company employees in Waterloo Cedar Rapids and Sioux City remained off the job. Union officials declined to comment.
In Sangor Maine nine Eisenhower pledged delegates were elected with possibly 11 of Maine's 16 Republican national convention delegates backing him. Taft's five delegates were chosen, with two uncommitted leaning to the general. The Maine Eisenhower committee welcomed the result.
Washington music students earned five Division 1 ratings eight Division 2 ratings and one Division 11t at the pre state high school music contest opening session in Pairfield. Notable performers included Maxine Crone Linda Brindley and John Wangens with solos across snare drum alto saxophone and piano. Funeral services for Jasper Walter Park were held Friday with Dr Reed presiding.
Former assistant internal revenue commissioner Daniel A. Bolich to be questioned next week about his involvement in a $7 million tax case against Truman Harvey Klein. He may testify before a federal grand jury in Brooklyn before appearing before the House committee in Washington.
In Minneapolis Larry Pearson threw a snowball at a passing car. The motorist stopped, grabbed the boy, and took him home. His father punished him by making him stand at a busy intersection after dark with a sign declaring he would not throw at cars.
All Washington county Republicans are urged to attend a Monday evening meeting at the court house to organize a Young Republican club. Clarold Rogers, first district young Republican chairman of Davenport, will speak. The meeting begins at 8 p m. The St James PRA meeting set for Tuesday is postponed to April 16.
Rev. Jacob DeKoning of Washington learns his brother-in-law Tarsselaar died Friday night at Grinnell hospital from injuries after a three car crash a week earlier. Carl De Koning, a brother of Rev. De Koning, survived without serious injuries but was later admitted to a Newton hospital.
Washington FCC gave up hope of lifting the television station freeze by April 1 due to unfinished paperwork. An FCC source said the ban would not end for another two weeks as backlogs persist. A 90 day thaw will follow, during which applications for new TV channels and construction permits will be received and processed.
Southeastern Iowa nurses and directors attended an institute on the Care of the Newborn. Speakers included Madelene Donnelly of the Iowa Health Department, Dr Jon McQueen from University of Iowa Hospitals, Helen Lovell, Jacqueline Tholt, Virginia Warner, Thelma Tarther, and John A Rumdall. Dinner was at the Presbyterian church.

Mrs. Elsie Soukup died today at Mercy hospital from injuries in an auto crash near Cedar Rapids. Funeral arrangements are pending with Jomne Funeral Home. Clayton Aoson and a daughter Marcella remain at Cedar Rapids hospital for treatment of injuries.

UN pilots destroyed four Russian built MiG-15s over North Korea in the past week but lost nine planes. Five were All American jets and two PS6 Sabres were shot down. three P-84 Thunderjets were knocked from the air. Ground fighting intensified with a U N patrol entering Communist trenches near the Miundungni Valley. about 60 Reds were killed in reported skirmishes.
Robert Fischer aged 15 had a motion for a new trial denied and received a 10 year prison term for killing his father, A W Fischer, in an April incident at Fort Madison. Defense plans an appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court.
Japanese police arrested 22 people in a clash at a rural village 20 miles north of Tokyo in a sweep that brought total arrests to 22 in two days. They reported 1,997 Communist centers raided and said illegal publications including Peace and Independence were nearly wiped out.
Iowa forecast shows a high of 65 degrees in the north and south areas this afternoon. Partly cloudy skies tonight into Sunday with lows 32 to 45. Sunday highs near 60 in the northwest to 55 to 60 in the southeast, mild conditions continue Monday.
