United Press reports all missing miners in Centralia coal mine No. 5 have been found. Of 142 workers, 31 survived. 111 dead after a gas-filled explosion 540 feet underground. Rescue crews located 17 more bodies, with final recovery expected.
A near capacity audience watched junior college students under Mrs. Ben Robbins present A B Schiff rin's I Like It Here in the high school auditorium. Gene Stone led the cast as the confident yet eccentric handyman amid Merriweather household schemes to marry off a daughter to a state senate candidate. Donald Stone as a conflicted New England professor and Mary Ellen Belier as his wife drive the plot with political entanglements, complemented by Nat Longer Lois Ofelt and Mr Smedley played by Jim Easter. Other student crew and performers supported the production with costuming, lights, sound, and interludes by Bill Frame and Esther Gerdes.

British foreign minister Ernest Bevin asked the big four to press for return to Germany by December 31, 1948, of all German prisoners held by the Allies. He urged plans by June 1, 1947 detailing repatriation of former German armed forces members, to be completed by 1948. Nations report millions of POWs across zones. Molotov cited 890,532 in Russia, with Britain, France and the US also listing totals.
Mrs Mabel DeVarne Marr 57 wife of Roy Marr died at her home in Ainsworth at two this morning after years of ill health. Born October 2 1889 in Mahaska county she lived in Fremont area and married Roy Marr June 12 1912 in Oskaloosa. Funeral two o clock Tuesday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev O J Fix. burial in Ainsworth cemetery. She was a member of Ainsworth Methodist church.
Washington high school scored seven division one victories in ten vocal events at Fairfield district contest. Rivalry was strong with up to 26 contestants per event. Washington also advances its mixed chorus to the state meet in Washington April 24–26.
Radcliffe Iowa reports seven year old Robert Hinderaker died from injuries after a car struck him. Funeral services were being planned as authorities investigated the incident.
Donald Patschke of near Marion was fined 20 dollars and costs for failure to keep his two children in school. One child age nine and the other 11 attended a distant school outside the district. the nervous condition of the older daughter led the justice to find guilt on only the single child.
A special meeting of the Washington city council approved an ordinance funding city government for the next fiscal year starting April 1. Major spending covers highways and streets at 9000 dollars, with 7000 for salaries and 5500 for police maintenance. The plan also allocates funds for sewer, lighting, garbage disposal, and various public services, with tax levy proceeds dedicated to listed purposes. The council set a fire protection stipend for the home for aged people near East Washington Street.
DOW CITY Iowa March 29 The Dow City board of education announces R Butterworth former superintendent of Ainsworth public schools for 15 years as the new head of the Dow City schools succeeding Merton P D Frank who resigned Butterworth takes over immediately.
A man walking home from It is struck by a car driven by James Patterson of Waterloo after he allegedly chased a feather blown from his Indian headdress. The crash occurred on a road near the intersection where bystanders reported the event. Authorities are reviewing details and potential charges.
The city election next Monday draws growing attention as councilman W. B. Dupuis launches a write in bid for mayor. Ballots will feature the Peoples party ticket headed by G. E. Mace with ward candidates and city officials listed, while an Independent column allows write ins. Polls open eight in the morning and close at eight in the evening at designated voting places.
Washington county veterans are invited to Leon Beatty post April meeting in city hall Legion rooms. Post commander S. W. Easter says the program will be entertaining educational and different for veterans of all Wars. Mr. Kaster plans a well presented program. attendance urged. Membership not required.
William M. Beal aged 86 died this afternoon at the home of his son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Charles Gilbert 715 East Washington street He had lived with the Gilberts and Ted Crones since a February fire destroyed his own home He was born in Haois and came to Washington county in 1901 He leaves his wife and seven children and was a member of the United Presbyterian church and the Journal's Three Quarter Century club.
Plan would make Iowa among first states to ratify the federal constitutional amendment limiting presidents to two terms not to exceed ten years. The measure awaits arrival in Des Moines as the legislature prepares to act when it reaches the calendar.
