Ane Klein 82 a retired farmer from Killduff sustained an arm injury bruises and shock when thrown from a car driven by his grandson Earl Klein after a collision on a rural road five miles south of Kellogg with a hog truck driven by Ernest Carlson Kellogg farmer. Ralph Keaton of Kellogg riding with Carlson suffered knee injuries. Sheriff Ray Barber said a charge of failing to stop will be filed against the Klein youth.
Mrs Marvel Pickering of Sioux City files in U S district court for 110000 in the death of her husband a head brakeman killed in an engine boiler explosion at Dimock South Dakota on February 17 1944. The suit accuses the railroad of negligence in not maintaining a proper water level in the locomotive boiler.
Friends of Lieut Col Robert J Shaw of Des Moines and Sigourney report he has been awarded the French Croix de Guerre for service with the Free French on the Cassino front in Italy. Shaw, a former state commander of the American Legion, previously acted as occupational adviser at the state selective service headquarters before going overseas two years ago. His son Robert J Jr will enter the navy this week.
Fred Maytag was reelected president of the Maytag Co at the Newton annual meeting. He has led the company founded by his grandfather F. L. Maytag and succeeded his father in 1940. Other officers George Umbrell Roy Bradt A H Taylor W I Sparks and E L Nelson were also reelected.
Anamosa reformatory investigation lasting over two months likely to cost the state about four thousand dollars. Major expenses include salaries for four state employees and a court reporter, plus hotel bills meals travel and a lengthy transcript. Investigators questioned one inmate and many others bringing witnesses to around one thousand. the transcript may fill several thousand pages. The probe followed the New Year’s Day escape of four prisoners from the institution and other departures from nearby prison farms.

Dr. S. J. Lewis, a longtime Columbus City and Columbus Junction physician, died at University Hospital Iowa City after recent treatment at Bellevue Muscatine. Born November 6, 1870 in Dawn Missouri, he practiced since 1896 and served as mayor of Columbus Junction. Survived by wife Carrie Johnston, two sons David and Burdette, daughter Mrs Ronald Horr, two grandchildren, a brother and four sisters. Burial planned in Columbus City.
Des Moines OPA district survey of about 4000 retail food stores in 64 Iowa counties checked compliance with ceiling prices on groceries meats and canned vegetables during the week of March 31. Walter D. Kline says results show general adherence with occasional noncompliance due to errors rather than willful violation aided by 800 volunteers.

Judge P J Siegers of Newton held court this week and will return for more March term cases. no trials set.
Soviet fronts reported the Ukraine front driving back German forces toward Odessa and advancing to 42 miles from the prewar Czechoslovak border. In Bessarabia and Bucovina the Prut river was crossed along a 150 mile front as Soviet armies prepared to push across and reopen Romania. Nikolaev fell, clearing the path toward Odessa, while Zhukov’s army pressed 12 miles through Stanislaw province and seized Gvozdets near the former border.

Allied bombers hit a 100 mile stretch of northern New Guinea from Hansa bay to Wewak sinking a Japanese supply ship and two barges. Liberators Mitchells and Boston bombers dropped 158 tons on Monday, destroying bridges buildings and enemy defenses as pilots reported no opposition and dust and smoke rising from Wewak. Other forces from Solomon bases dropped 46 tons on Rabaul and 650 tons on Kavieng as U S battleships recently pounded the area.
Fred Clark of Kirksville Iowa near Albia was arrested by State Patrolman Powers east of town and charged with reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license. He appeared before Justice Ben Coppock and was fined 50 dollars for reckless driving and 15 dollars for no license. Half of the larger fine was suspended and 5 dollars of the license fine remained unpaid. Clark, a coal miner, plans to raise the money and is jailed in Washington county with his Scottie dog allowed in the cell.
