Lincoln March 28 Special to Evening Journal reports the Republican caucus nominated H. Millard of Omaha for the long term and Gov. Chas. Chas Dietrich for the short term. both were elected in the legislature ending a deadlock. Senators Powers and Howard granted new trials by the Court of Appeals.
Caleb Power and Jonas Howard, convicted of complicity in Goble's murder, receive new trials after a March decision by the Kentucky Court of Appeals. The ruling orders the trials to be reheard to reassess evidence and legal standards.
In Muncie Indiana C J Carrolson a poor tailor claims he is the sole heir to a 5 000 000 estate left by the late Mr Rice and will probe the grandfather's death while his mother who visited Rice in New York last year also died suddenly He plans an immediate investigation and a full claim. In London a government leader said no prospect of international talks to curb grain or gambling price manipulation.
Three crew members died from gas suffocation in the Great Northern freight train stalled in the Cascade tunnel near Seattle Washington. Three others were injured Fireman J W Smith William Jewell and Pedro Springfield Ills.
Yang Yu the Chinese minister to Russia suffers two falls due to vertigo and is reported seriously ill. The Nebraska treasury receives 10000 dollars from Union Pacific Railroad as fees. Manila notes Aguinaldo is a prisoner brought in by General Funston. He was captured in Isabella Province near Casiguran nine miles from Baler after a six day march from the east coast of Luzon. His staff were captured with him and brought to Manila aboard the gunboat Vicksburg.
Dispatches from Vryheid and London claim General French with Darthal and Pulteney columns killed wounded or captured 1 200 Boers and seized cannon rifles wagons and vast livestock. The reports also note Boer captures near Richmond and Kruger’s Optimistic take on the war turning point. In Benton county an aged miser was robbed of a sack containing over 600 dollars and two separate crime stories emerge from Kansas City with a clerk confessing to diamond ring theft and ransom threats.
English Chancellor Sir Michael Hicks Beach faced questions in the House of Commons about imposing a substantial import duty on foreign steel due to the United States Steel corporation and rising German duties. It will showcase education social economy books scientific apparatus sanitation and hygiene musical instruments and broader intellectual progress under Dr Selim H Peabody and Dr Jacob S Otto. Models and maps will illustrate school equipment public health sanitation and urban works with focus on tenement conditions and municipal drainage.
