U S Marines recaptured Vegas Hill on the Western Front after eight hours of uphill fighting. Chinese forces had attacked 3,500 troops, taking Vegas and Reno outposts two miles southwest of Old Baldy. Col L W Walt confirmed the hill was secured as Marines prepared to dig in for keeps.
Dr. Jonas Salk announced progress toward a polio vaccine after 15 years of work by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. He said initial trials on 90 subjects showed safe responses and urged continued careful testing before declaring success or failure.

Haiar of Sabula drove off the road after hitting loose gravel blinded by oncoming lights. Don Moyer, also of Sabula, was a occupant in the Harar car. Thrapp of West Chester and Mrs. James Buck of Washington, great grandparents Mr and Mrs C. M. Crossett of Washington and William Hall of Wellin.
London reports Soviet Russia granted 10 American newspaper and radio editors permission to visit Moscow for a week. It marks the first such group allowed in six years, announced by James L. Wick, who heads a Midwest newspaper chain.

DES MOINES The Iowa House approved a resolution by 67 to 32 to reapportion the Legislature and give nine most populous counties more power in the Senate. The plan would raise Senate seats from 50 to 60 chosen by population districts and reduce House members from 108 to 99 with one representative per county. If approved by the Senate, the measure would go to the 1956 ballot after a second legislative act.

The recreational council announces a three session tennis clinic for sixth to eighth grade students in public and parochial schools beginning Saturday afternoon April 11 at the YMCA gym. Sessions continue April 18 and 25 with registration through public schools and St James school. A four-engine California Eastern DC-4 crash landed 310 miles west of San Francisco. All four aboard escaped in life rafts as Coast Guard aircraft and vessels moved to rescue survivors sighted by a rescue plane. The aircraft remained afloat at the time of report.
