In Centralia Illinois rescue teams reached Mine No. 5 area where a blast killed many workers. As 16 more bodies were recovered, total stats showed 142 men inside, 33 bodies recovered, 31 rescued alive. Investigators cited safety violations and gas hazards.
Secretary of War Patterson testifies on the Truman anti communism plan stressing the $400 million Dardanelles defense as the best military investment in the eastern Mediterranean. Chicago report states Cen tralia Illinois miners union asked Gov Dwight H Green last year to fix alleged safety hazards in the Centrelia mine. Only one of four signers has been rescued from the mine where 97 men were entombed or killed after Tuesday’s explosion. The governor’s office released the March 3 1946 letter with other correspondence about mine conditions.
Eight University of Iowa students will publish The Washington Journal in Washington covering April 11 12 and 14 with local guidance from staff. 18 month old Gerald Hulburd of Breda Iowa was killed when his family car collided with a semi driven by Leo Stephens Massena Iowa. Stephens jackknifed on a curve injuring Hulburd parents, as highway patrol reported.

Senate votes include three appropriations measures including 4,000 for the school lunch program through June 30.
The House approved a tax relief bill by 273 to 137, with 237 to 172 rejecting a recommital motion. The plan halves taxes for those under 1000 dollars and cuts from 20 to 10 percent for higher incomes, retroactive to January 1 and possibly July 1, facing Senate revision and a veto threat from President Truman.
The senate approved by voice vote a 90 day renewal of wartime controls on scarce foods and other short supply commodities. The action came less than ten minutes after the bill reached the floor. The rise adds about 20 cents to a fifth bottle of popular whisky brands, following legislative action to allocate 10 percent of gross receipts to cities towns and the military service tax credit fund.
The senate voted 33 to 16 to reconsider a bill to raise the maximum length of combination trucks and trailers on Iowa highways and then postponed further action.
