President Roosevelt decided to return the air mail to private operation without waiting for permanent legislation. Temporary bids will be called at once, with the army to be phased out of the business and private airlines to operate mail on a temporary basis while permanent law is delayed.
An election worker was killed and another shot at polling places in Kansas City as voting continued on March 27. Police investigate the attack and identify suspects.
Ten players from Washington De Molay high school gym workouts prepare for the state tournament at Boone this week. Coach George Freshwaters names Join Jackson Milo Glider Jimmy Wella Jack Lytle Walter Jungbluth Peter Jungebluth Lewis Dusenbery Elwyn Booth Genkins and Evans for Amos chapter. Allen and daughter Louise of Richland visited here yesterday.
Judith RK Warren, a young newspaper woman living at 614 East Main, plans to make Washington her home and join the Evening Journal. She will affiliate with the Methodist church, attend Cornell College to graduate with honors, and pursue music, dramatics, and journalism. A dependent family awaits her return and she notes a strong sense of responsibility. Her preferred Washington area and hobbies remain unspecified.
Fortnightly Club Music department outlines May 6 to 12 activities for students bands teachers and churches. Harvey Coulter from Monmouth College will perform a voice recital as part of the observance and the St Olaf Choir is slated to give a concert at Iowa City Memorial Union in the afternoon of April 8.
Four young men John Jackson Lewis Dusenbery Don McClure and Jimmy Wells announced a game between the 1933 and 1934 basketball squads for next week possibly Tuesday. Coach Guy Carlton welcomes the idea with flexibility on players and attendance.
Three former Dillinger gang members were moved to the state prison in Columbus under heavy guard. Harry Pierpont and Charles Makley face the electric chair, while Russell Clark receives life imprisonment.
Des Moines reports Lt Gov N G Kraschel and bond broker Carleton Beh will face trial next month on charges of conspiring to defraud the United States in the Public Works Administration. Beh will be tried in Davenport on forgery related to the PWA, with Kraschel and Beh due in Des Moines for the conspiracy case on April 25.
Mrs. Gilbert Hotle and her infant son living near Gladwin are slated to depart Washington County Hospital today to visit relatives here before returning home.

Five Washington Boy Scouts appeared before a board of review and were approved for promotion to second class. The scouts were David Pearson Robert Masson Matthew Gamble Cloud Willits Jr and Stanley White. Special commendation was given to David Pearson for his proficiency. A court of honor was planned for the evening with the U's Men's club Scout sponsors for badge presentation.
Initial collections on the Washington Federal Building & Loan association began today after a board meeting. Temporary headquarters are on the second floor of the Washington Loan & Trust Building, with operations expected to start fully next month and loans likely within three to four weeks. Officers include President Rh. C C. Scott, Vice President D .b. Sherman, Secretary-Treasurer C. R. McCutchen. Down payments should be paid to the secretary-treasurer at the Loan & Trust building.
Mrs Reg Long and baby Carl Thomas of Crawfordsville were to leave Washington County Hospital this afternoon for the home of Mrs Long’s parents Mr and Mrs Sherm Crone in Washington. They will stay here awhile. The Longs have another child, Talma Marie, 6, a first grader in Centennial School.
The Presbyterian Christian Endeavor society selected new officers for the season. Eva Diller is president, Kathryn Little vice president, Hayden Hughes secretary, Flora Dodds treasurer, and Josephine Bailey adviser.
Municipal elections across Washington county saw fierce contests in Wellman Brighton Riverside Ainsworth and Wayland with Crawfordsville Kalona and Keota fielding single tickets. In Wellman E C Jones narrowly won mayoral race amid debates over a light plant contract as 5006 votes set a town record.
Iowa unveils a 2 percent sales tax on gross sales to consumers starting April 1. The plan, part of a revised tax program, aims to ease property tax burdens by shifting revenue to government. Retailers will file quarterly returns. licenses begin April 15. Services remain untaxed. many business transactions and exemptions outlined in consumer guidance.
The Board of Assessment and Review adopts a tiered sales tax for transactions under one dollar and a separate fractional bracket for admission tickets. Tax rates range from no tax on 1 to 14 cents, 1 cent on 15 to 65 cents, 2 cents on 65 to 99 cents, and 2 percent on sales of $1.90 or more. Admission tickets follow 1 cent tax on 10 to 50 cents and 2 cents on 55 to 80 cents.
Joseph M Elroy, 14, died at 6 30 yesterday evening after years of ill health. A broken hip in a fall sped his decline. Funeral at Sherman’s funeral home Wednesday at two o clock with Dr F C Witzigman of the Methodist church in charge. Burial in Woodlawn cemetery. Born February 21 1850 at Heaver Pa a son of Robert Wilson McElroy and Matilda freed McElroy he came to Washington with his parents the same year and lived there except for years in Racine Wis. He was a registered pharmacist later leaving that occupation due to ill health. His South Avenue C home burned eight years ago and he sustained burns in the fire. He lived with his niece Mrs Charles Welsh since then. He leaves one brother Frank McElroy of Washington two nieces Mrs Welsh and Mrs Lillian Saunders of Los Angeles and one nephew Homer Meckroy of Mt Pleasant. Five brothers and sisters are deceased.
The trial of W. H. Jordan versus D. C. Schantz began taking evidence in Columbus Junction for a $10,000 damages claim following a morning November collision between a Jordan car and a Schantz truck, reportedly driven by Mrs. Schantz. Plaintiff witnesses included Jordan, Dale Minlick, Warren Stewart, and Mike Crone as auto workers examined the wrecked car. The jury panel listed Clive Gray, Ella Gordon, Ruth Jones, Lena Knapp, M. M. Flynn Everett, Schmitt, L. W. Wood, Grace Stone, L. W. Soule, Plessey Holmes, Frances Romine, and Wallace Johnson. Petit jurors were excused until Thursday morning.
President Roosevelt signs the Vinson Trammell act authorizing 102 warships and 1,140 airplanes over five years to meet London treaty limits and replace obsolete ships. He reiterates support for naval arms limitations and aims to join the 1935 naval conference in further reductions. He plans a ten day fishing trip on Vincent Astor's yacht after clearing his desk. He will veto the independent offices bill on pay restoration proposals and veterans’ benefits.
The Des Moines gathering of dairy producers from 91 Iowa counties endorsed the AAA production control plan as proposed by Secretary Wallace. Attendees included kK. P. Hayes as Washington county delegate and Lloyd B. Cunningham as chairman with Wilbue Hubbard as secretary. The plan calls for a processing tax, a 2 million dollar dairy advertising fund, import limits, 10 to 20 percent butterfat reduction, relief milk for needy children, cattle transfers, and a long term program aligned with Agriculture Department guidance.
