An Iowa employment analysis by Homer Freeman of the U S employment service notes many jobs for capable residents and a broad pool of workers. He says war fluctuations exist but unemployment has decreased and is expected to keep falling.

The government civilian pilot training contract for Washington at the airport and junior college was received by Supt. EB A Ralston and Manager Ralph Scott. It covers instruction and operation costs and will be signed by local management for submission to civilian aeronautical authorities. Ground school has begun for ten cadets, with flying instruction to start soon once terms clear.
General Douglas Macarthur pledged we shall win or die in a crusade against the axis as renewed Japanese offensives struck in the Philippines and central Burma. In the Philippines Corregidor fortress faced a six hour bombing with four places lost. 54 bombers took part and defenses were scorned by American and Filipino troops resisting a surrender ultimatum. In Burma, Japanese parachutists and infantry drives pressed toward Prome oil fields and Mandalay.
City hall sewing room will operate three afternoons and one evening per week due to material shortages. Mrs Jewel Carris oversees the room, with hours set for Tuesday Friday and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 30 to 9 30 p.m. on Friday evenings.

New Orleans reports a small freighter with no offensive gear rammed and sank a German U-boat at night after the submarine fired upon it. The crew, ready on deck, swung the ship around and struck the submarine, which failed to dive and was destroyed. The captain credited sheer luck for the missed torpedo and praised crew unity in the bold action.
The county welfare office reports surplus food commodities valued at 12 369.59 distributed in 1941 across 29 food items. The program supplements relief groceries and aids low income families while supporting farmers and grocers. The welfare director notes prior opposition faded as families learned to diversify diets and use more staples. The monthly reach ranged from 428 to 756 people with 152 students receiving commodities through hot lunch programs.
The Civil Air Patrol organizers plan a meeting at 8 o'clock tonight at the Y M C A to launch the civilian defense unit. The special pre Easter program will be in Barhydt chapel at Parsons College Fairfield Wednesday April 1 with the Philharmonic Society of the college performing.
At least several men killed or missing after a massive explosion at a cement quarry near BLASTON. Reports say 20 tons of dynamite detonated as a truck unloaded charges, with many bodies found at the scene and homes nearby leveled. FBI agents opened sabotage probes as rescue crews searched for missing workers.
Des Moines reports March 24 state income tax receipts totaling 1,890,938 dollars, up 14 percent from 1,652,212 dollars the previous year, according to the state tax commission.
W G Murray, Iowa State College finance expert, says insurance companies face difficulty selling larger farms. A study of 41 insurers with 6000 plus Iowa farms for sale in January 1942 shows big holdings concentrate in the south, west and north edges while smaller farms move faster to absentee owners. The average insured farm was 204 acres, vs 1690 acres Iowa average in the last census.
